Volunteer Projects
Our volunteer projects are at the heart of everything we do at Travel Roots. They offer ethical and transformative opportunities to travel. We connect volunteers with more than 250 partners – NGOs, charities, community groups, wildlife organisations and more – to support meaningful projects that make a genuine and lasting impact on local communities. These projects cover all sorts of sectors, from healthcare and education to wildlife conservation and community development. We only partner with projects that have been proven to be true collaborations with local organisations and communities to address their unique needs. When you volunteer through Travel Roots, you can be sure that what you’re doing is relevant and sustainable.
Unlike conventional tourism, which often focuses on leisure and sightseeing, at Travel Roots we provide volunteer opportunities that align with your skills, interests, and goals. You can enjoy a deeper connection to the work being done and ensure that everything you do has the best possible effect.
Sustainability and ethics are at the heart of Travel Roots’ mission. The organisation partners with initiatives like Just One Tree, pledging to plant a tree for every booking made, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship. Many of our project opportunities focus on conservation and sustainable practices, promoting awareness and eco-friendly habits among both communities and our volunteers.
We make sure that our volunteer projects are empowering for the people and communities involved. We don’t believe in ‘saviourism’ or people sweeping in to provide short-term fixes to bigger problems that have no buy-in from those whose homes, communities and landscapes we’re travelling to. We build resilience rather than imposing solutions, and so create lasting change. To that end, we ensure that all our partners adhere to fair labour principles and that the work our volunteers do is adding to the local area, not undermining existing initiatives or replacing local jobs.
Travel Roots also fosters lifelong connections among volunteers, allowing them to build networks that extend beyond their project duration. This focus on creating a supportive community enhances cultural understanding and promotes collaboration across borders, making the volunteer experience not only impactful but also enriching.
