Are you passionate about animal welfare and dreaming of an unforgettable volunteering experience in Ireland? Our Travel Roots Animal Rescue Program in Ireland offers you the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of rescued animals while discovering the warmth, culture and natural beauty of the Irish countryside.
Based near the charming market town of Castleisland in County Kerry, this hands-on volunteer program supports a dedicated animal rescue centre providing care and shelter for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, goats and sheep. The centre cares for approximately 140 dogs alongside a variety of other rescued animals, many of whom have experienced neglect, abandonment or mistreatment.
As a volunteer, you'll become part of a passionate team working to provide these animals with the care, attention and companionship they deserve. From feeding and exercising dogs to maintaining clean, comfortable living environments, your contribution helps support the centre's daily operations and the wellbeing of its residents.
Your volunteering experience also extends beyond the animal rescue centre. Three days each week are dedicated to animal care, while the remaining two weekdays are spent supporting other worthwhile community initiatives, such as charity shops or local environmental projects.
Alongside your volunteer work, you'll stay with a welcoming Irish host family, giving you the chance to experience authentic local life, improve your English and explore one of Ireland's most beautiful regions.
Whether you're considering a future career in animal care or simply want to give something back while travelling, this program offers a rewarding combination of animal welfare, community engagement and cultural discovery.
By volunteering on our Animal Rescue Program in Ireland, you will:
Support the daily care and welfare of rescued dogs and other animals.
Help feed, exercise, socialise and provide companionship to animals recovering from difficult circumstances.
Gain practical experience in animal shelter operations and responsible animal care.
Contribute to meaningful community initiatives alongside your animal rescue placement.
Experience authentic Irish culture while staying with a welcoming local host family.
Discover the stunning landscapes, traditional villages and vibrant communities of County Kerry.
Develop confidence, teamwork and practical skills while contributing to worthwhile causes.
What to Expect: Life as an Animal Rescue Volunteer in Ireland
Your days in Ireland will combine rewarding animal care, practical volunteer work and opportunities to immerse yourself in the local community.
The rescue centre provides a busy, hands-on environment where every helping hand makes a difference. You'll work alongside experienced staff and local volunteers, assisting with everyday tasks that help keep the animals healthy, comfortable and cared for.
Animal Rescue Days – Typically Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Your responsibilities may include:
Preparing food and feeding rescued animals.
Walking dogs and providing daily exercise.
Cleaning kennels, cages and animal enclosures.
Spending time socialising and playing with animals, including puppies.
Helping maintain the rescue centre through tidying, painting, fencing and general upkeep.
Supporting staff with other practical tasks as required.
Working at an animal rescue centre isn't always easy. Some animals have experienced difficult circumstances, and the environment can be physically demanding, particularly when caring for large numbers of dogs.
Volunteers should be comfortable with noisy surroundings, outdoor work, changing weather conditions and getting their hands dirty. However, the opportunity to provide comfort and companionship to animals in need can make the experience incredibly rewarding.
Community Volunteering Days – Two Weekdays
To provide a balanced volunteering experience, you'll spend the remaining two weekdays supporting other local community projects.
Depending on placement availability, these could include charity shops, community clean-up initiatives or community sports facilities.
These activities offer an opportunity to meet local people, contribute to different causes and experience another side of Irish community life.
Weekends & Free Time
Volunteers generally have two free days each week, providing plenty of opportunities to relax, explore County Kerry and experience Ireland's rich cultural heritage.
Throughout your stay, you'll receive guidance from your project mentor and ongoing local support.
Your Impact on Animal Welfare in Ireland
Every animal deserves to feel safe, cared for and valued. Unfortunately, many animals arrive at rescue centres having experienced abandonment, neglect or unsuitable living conditions.
Animal rescue organisations play an essential role in providing these animals with shelter, consistent care and opportunities for a better future.
By joining this program, you'll contribute directly to the daily work that makes this possible.
Your contribution helps to:
Provide consistent feeding, exercise and companionship for rescued animals.
Maintain clean, safe and comfortable environments.
Support the wellbeing and socialisation of animals awaiting new homes.
Reduce the day-to-day workload of dedicated rescue centre staff.
Strengthen local community initiatives through additional volunteering support.
While you may only be volunteering for a few weeks, the attention and care you provide can make a genuine difference to the animals you encounter.
Beyond animal welfare, this experience allows you to support local charitable initiatives, develop practical skills and gain a deeper appreciation of the dedication required to operate a rescue centre.
Your Home in Ireland – Experience Life with a Local Host Family
During your Animal Rescue Program in Ireland, you'll stay with a carefully selected local host family, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience everyday Irish life beyond the usual tourist trail.
Living with a host family allows you to experience the country's renowned hospitality, practise your English and become part of a welcoming community.
Most volunteers are provided with a private bedroom, although some placements may involve sharing with another volunteer of the same gender.
Your accommodation includes meals, and your host family will help you become familiar with the local area and daily routines.
Your First Night in Cork
Your adventure begins in Cork City, where you'll spend your first night in shared hostel accommodation.
After arriving, you'll have time to settle in and enjoy a welcome dinner before joining an orientation session the following day.
The orientation introduces you to Irish culture, volunteering expectations, practical travel information and the support available throughout your experience.
Following orientation and a guided walking tour of Cork, you'll travel onwards to your volunteer placement and host community.
