Want to volunteer as a women empowerment advocate in Kenya? Our Travel Roots Women Empowerment Program offers a powerful opportunity to support women, transform communities, and become part of a movement creating real, lasting change.
This program is available in two unique locations, giving you the flexibility to choose the experience that best suits you:
Nairobi (Kibera) – a vibrant, fast-paced city environment where you’ll experience authentic urban Kenyan life and work within dynamic community groups in one of Africa’s largest communities
Rural Community Placement (Kajiado County) – a more immersive, grassroots experience where you’ll live and work within traditional Maasai communities such as Isinya (Nandoderit Village), Ngong (Kimuka Village), and Kajiado Town (Kumpa Village)
While both locations share the same core mission—empowering women and girls—the day-to-day experience, cultural exposure, and pace of life will differ, allowing you to tailor your journey.
Across Kenya, many women still face daily challenges due to gender inequality, limited access to education, restricted employment opportunities, and cultural barriers. These challenges can affect confidence, independence, and long-term wellbeing.
This program is designed to help change that.
Working alongside passionate local teams, you’ll support safe, inclusive spaces where women and girls can reclaim their voices, build confidence, and gain practical skills that support long-term independence. From education and mentorship to open discussions and community engagement, every interaction plays a role in creating lasting impact.
Your Role as a Volunteer
Your role is hands-on, meaningful, and varied—and will adapt depending on your chosen location and the needs of the community.
In Nairobi (Kibera), you’ll support established community initiatives through workshops, school outreach, and group sessions focused on empowerment, education, and wellbeing.
In Kajiado County, your work becomes deeply grassroots. You’ll collaborate with local women’s groups who meet regularly for table banking and entrepreneurship sessions (3 days per week)—supporting them with:
Basic business skills and record keeping
Developing small business ideas
Building financial independence and confidence
Alongside this, you’ll also support youth-focused education sessions, particularly during school holidays, covering:
Sexual and reproductive health
Nutrition and wellbeing
Early marriage prevention
Women’s rights and gender equality
Menstrual hygiene and education
All schools involved are local government schools, ensuring your work directly benefits the wider community.

No two days are ever the same—you may find yourself leading a workshop one day, supporting group discussions the next, or working within schools to educate and inspire young girls. The program is built around real community needs, meaning your involvement is flexible, impactful, and deeply rewarding.
This program goes beyond volunteering—it’s about connection, understanding, and shared growth.
You’ll not only contribute to meaningful change within communities, but you’ll also gain a deeper understanding of global challenges, cultural perspectives, and the true power of empowerment at a grassroots level.
By the end of your journey, you won’t just have supported a project—you’ll have been part of something bigger. A movement where women uplift women, voices are heard, and change begins from within.

What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Women Empowerment Volunteer
No two days on this program are ever the same. Your experience will be shaped by the needs of the community, the time of year, and ongoing projects. The schedule below is an example of what a typical day may look like—but activities can and will vary, keeping your experience dynamic, meaningful, and engaging.
Each day is filled with connection, conversation, and collaboration. You’ll inspire and be inspired—whether you're leading a workshop, supporting a group discussion, or simply sharing stories within the community.

In the afternoon, you may visit a local school to run educational sessions or support group discussions alongside trained staff. These sessions often focus on empowerment, decision-making, and creating a safe space for open conversation.4:00 PM – Reflection & Free Time
Wrap up the day with a debrief—reflecting on the impact of your work and planning for what’s next. Afterwards, enjoy some downtime with your host family, fellow volunteers, or explore your surroundings.Evenings & Days Off
Your time outside of volunteering is just as memorable. Depending on your location, you might enjoy traditional cooking, language learning, cultural evenings, or exploring local markets, nature, and nearby attractions. This isn’t just a routine—it’s an experience that evolves with the community, allowing you to fully immerse yourself, adapt, and make a genuine impact where it’s needed most.
Your Impact as a Volunteer
Empowering women doesn’t just change lives—it transforms entire communities. As a volunteer, you’ll help Kenyan women discover their voice, build confidence, and reclaim their power.
Whether you’re teaching a girl about her rights, helping a mother launch her first business, or creating safe spaces to talk openly, you’re part of a ripple effect that lasts long after you leave.
You’ll learn, grow, and leave a mark that’s measured not in numbers—but in the courage, strength, and hope you help cultivate.
Your Home in Kenya
Throughout your volunteering journey—whether you choose the vibrant city life of Nairobi or a more immersive rural community setting in Kajiado County—you’ll stay with a trusted local host family in a safe and welcoming environment.
These homestays are a core part of the experience, offering far more than just a place to sleep. They provide a genuine insight into Kenyan culture, daily life, and traditions—allowing you to build meaningful connections and feel truly part of the community.
Nairobi Placement (Kibera & Riruta Satellite)
If you choose the Nairobi option, your project will be based in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest and most vibrant urban communities.
You’ll stay with a host family in Riruta Satellite, a residential area within Nairobi. From here, you’ll travel to Kibera each day (approximately 20 minutes by Uber, depending on traffic).
This setup gives you the perfect balance—experiencing authentic local life at home, while working in a dynamic, fast-paced community environment during the day.
Rural Placement (Kajiado County – Maasai Community)
For a more immersive experience, you can choose to live and volunteer within traditional Maasai communities in Kajiado County, with placements in:
Isinya (Nandoderit Village) – approx. 1 hour 40 minutes from Nairobi
Ngong (Kimuka Village) – approx. 1 hour from Nairobi
Kajiado Town (Kumpa Village) – approx. 2 hours 30 minutes from Nairobi
Here, you’ll live directly within the community you are supporting. Daily travel to placements is often on foot or by local transport:
Kimuka: ~40-minute walk to the school
Isinya: ~50-minute walk to the school
Kumpa: ~30-minute motorbike ride
In Isinya, it’s not uncommon to see wildlife such as zebra, ostrich, and gazelle right near your homestay—making this a truly unique and memorable setting.
What’s Included:
Shared room with bedding, fan, and mosquito net
Access to a private or shared bathroom (varies by location)
Three traditional, home-cooked meals per day
Filtered water, tea, and light snacks
Access to laundry (self-service or small local fee)
Wi-Fi availability (stronger in Nairobi, more limited in rural areas)
Rooms are typically shared with fellow volunteers and include all basic essentials for a comfortable stay. Facilities may vary depending on your location (urban vs rural), but all host families are carefully selected and vetted to ensure safety, cleanliness, and a supportive environment.
Living with a host family is often one of the most memorable parts of the journey. From sharing meals to learning local customs and even picking up a few words of Swahili, it offers a deeper, more authentic connection to the place and people around you.
It’s more than accommodation—it’s your home in Kenya, and a key part of what makes this experience so special.
History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
