Protection of endangered sea turtles and hatchery work, alongside care and habitat management for juvenile crocodiles

Choose from 1 to 15 weeks

Eco‑camp – shared cabin

Up to 8 hours per day (including night patrols)
2 days off per week

  • Looking for a unique opportunity to protect both sea turtles and crocodiles in one of Mexico’s most biodiverse coastal areas? Our Travel Roots Turtle and Crocodile Conservation Program in Mexico combines sea turtle nest protection with the care of juvenile crocodiles in a stunning beach and mangrove setting.

As a volunteer, you’ll patrol beaches at night to monitor nesting sea turtles, protect their nests from poaching and predation, and assist with relocating eggs to the hatchery. By day, you’ll help care for young crocodiles in a controlled environment, supporting efforts to monitor their health and prepare them for future release.

Additional tasks include hatchery maintenance, beach clean-ups, mangrove habitat support, and contributing to environmental education activities that raise awareness about these incredible species. This program offers a rich, hands-on conservation experience while working closely with local community members dedicated to protecting their coastal ecosystem.

    Key activities:
    • Night patrols to protect nesting turtles and collect eggs
    • Hatchery maintenance and hatchling release
    • Daily care, feeding, and enclosure cleaning for juvenile crocodiles
    • Beach clean-ups and habitat protection in coastal and mangrove areas
    • Support for environmental education and eco-tourism initiatives

  • By volunteering on our Turtle and Crocodile Conservation Program in Mexico, you will:

    • Protect nesting sea turtles and support hatchling survival
    • Care for juvenile crocodiles and contribute to their rehabilitation
    • Gain hands-on skills in wildlife care, monitoring, and habitat management
    • Work in a unique mangrove and beach ecosystem alongside local conservationists
    • Help maintain and restore vital habitats through clean-ups and habitat work
    • Be part of a community-driven conservation effort in a stunning coastal location

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Turtle and Crocodile Conservation Volunteer in Mexico

Every day brings a mix of sea turtle and crocodile conservation tasks, shaped by the season and the needs of the animals. A typical day might look like this:

7:00 AM – Hatchery check: monitor nests, check for hatchlings, and record data

8:00 AM – Breakfast at the eco-camp, shared with other volunteers

9:00 AM – Crocodile care: help with feeding, cleaning enclosures, and health monitoring

11:00 AM – Beach clean-up or mangrove habitat maintenance

12:30 PM – Lunch and rest during the hottest hours

3:00 PM – Hatchery maintenance or assist with community outreach activities

6:00 PM – Dinner and time to unwind by the beach

Your days off offer opportunities to explore nearby beaches, mangroves, and local villages or to simply relax and soak up the natural beauty of the area.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

By volunteering on our Travel Roots Turtle and Crocodile Conservation Program in Mexico, you play a crucial role in safeguarding two of the region’s most iconic and threatened species. Your work on night patrols, in the hatchery, and with juvenile crocodiles helps ensure that more turtles and crocodiles survive to strengthen wild populations.

Every egg you help protect, every hatchling you release, and every crocodile you care for contributes directly to reversing the decline of these species in the wild. You’ll also help restore and protect their habitats, reduce the impact of pollution, and raise awareness within local communities about the importance of conservation.

Beyond the wildlife, your support helps sustain local eco-tourism initiatives that provide fair, conservation-based livelihoods for coastal families, creating a ripple effect of positive change that extends beyond your time on the project.

  • Your home on Mexico’s Pacific coast

Volunteers stay in a simple, eco-friendly camp located just meters from the nesting beaches. Designed for low-impact living, the camp offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature while supporting conservation efforts.

    Sleeping arrangements
You will be accommodated in shared wooden cabins or spacious tents, depending on availability and group size. Cabins and tents include basic bedding (mattress, sheet, and pillow). Accommodation is rustic but comfortable, offering an authentic experience close to the natural environment you’re helping to protect.

    What’s provided
    • Access to shared bathroom facilities with showers and toilets
    • Fresh drinking water
    • Three nutritious meals per day (vegetarian and vegan options available)
    • Communal dining and relaxation areas with shade
    • Simple electricity and lighting powered by solar energy

The camp is a communal and welcoming space where volunteers, local coordinators, and community members come together to share meals, stories, and the rewarding work of turtle conservation. Evenings often bring stunning sunsets and clear night skies, perfect for unwinding after a day’s efforts.

  • History

Our trusted partner for this program works with grassroots conservation groups along Mexico’s Pacific coast, protecting sea turtles through community-led initiatives. For over a decade, they have partnered with local families, indigenous communities, and conservation cooperatives to protect nesting beaches, operate hatcheries, and promote sustainable eco-tourism.

Their work arose from the need to reduce poaching and habitat destruction, while providing local communities with sustainable alternatives through ethical conservation tourism.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is to protect sea turtle populations through effective nest protection, habitat conservation, and community education. By combining conservation action with responsible eco-tourism, their projects aim to ensure that both wildlife and coastal communities can thrive together.

The vision is a future where marine wildlife is safeguarded by the very communities that share its habitat, creating lasting benefits for both people and nature along Mexico’s biodiverse Pacific coastline.

They help fund the tools, materials, and local staff needed to protect sea turtle nests, care for juvenile crocodiles, and maintain the delicate balance of beach and mangrove ecosystems.
