Supporting education in under-resourced classrooms

Choose from 2–12 weeks

Volunteer guesthouse or host family stay

Up to 6 hours a day
5 days per week

  • Want to volunteer as a teacher in Uganda? Our Travel Roots Teaching Program offers you the chance to work alongside local educators to provide vital support in under-resourced schools.

Whether you’re assisting in English, maths, science, or arts, you’ll play a hands-on role in helping children access quality education—and spark a love for learning that could last a lifetime.

With large class sizes, minimal teaching resources, and few trained teachers, these schools welcome the energy, ideas, and cultural exchange volunteers bring. Whether you're supporting lesson plans, organising group work, or leading your own classroom activities, your efforts are a meaningful part of these students’ educational journey.

You don’t need to be a qualified teacher—just bring patience, creativity, and enthusiasm. You'll receive guidance and be paired with a local teacher as needed.

    Key Volunteer Activities:

    • Assist in classrooms for subjects such as English, mathematics, science, geography, or creative arts
    • Lead revision games, group discussions, or reading circles
    • Support students one-on-one or in small groups needing extra help
    • Create learning materials and visual aids for lessons
    • Organise fun and educational after-school activities
    • Participate in staff planning or training sessions where appropriate
    • Share stories, culture, and inspiration with young learners

You’ll quickly become a familiar, trusted face in the classroom—and in the community.

Your presence provides more than academic support. It brings encouragement, confidence, and the reminder that these children’s futures are worth investing in.

  • By volunteering on our Teaching Program in Uganda, you will:

    • Make a lasting impact by improving access to quality education
    • Help children grow in confidence, curiosity, and literacy
    • Gain classroom experience and develop teaching and communication skills
    • Create fun and engaging learning environments, even with limited resources
    • Support overstretched teachers and bring fresh energy into the school
    • Discover the joy of cross-cultural exchange through education
    • Become part of a community that values learning, connection, and growth
    • Inspire children—and be inspired by them in return

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life a Volunteer Teacher in Uganda

Each school day offers a rewarding mix of structure and spontaneity. You'll work in a primary or secondary school where your support is truly valued—whether you're leading a lesson or helping students practise their handwriting.

Enjoy a local breakfast at your accommodation and review any lesson materials you’ve prepared or been assigned.

8:00 AM – Morning Assembly & First Lessons
Join the school staff for morning greetings and announcements. Assist in teaching English, maths, science, or your area of interest with guidance from the lead teacher.

    10:30 AM – Break & Student Interaction
Spend time playing or chatting with students during their break. These informal moments are great for cultural exchange and bonding.

11:00 AM – Classroom Support & Group Work
Support teachers by helping students complete class exercises or running small-group learning sessions. You may also introduce creative learning activities.

    1:00 PM – Lunch & Rest Time
Take a break for lunch either at the school or your accommodation.

    2:00 PM – Afternoon Activities
Help with marking, preparing learning materials, or running extracurriculars like reading circles, arts and crafts, or sports.

4:00 PM – End of School Day
Say goodbye to the students and head back to your accommodation. This is your time to relax, explore, or prepare for the next day.

    Weekends & Evenings
You're free to explore Uganda’s rich culture and natural beauty—visit local markets, enjoy social events with other volunteers, or take day trips to nearby sights like Mabira Forest or Lake Victoria.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

Education is one of the most powerful tools for change—and by volunteering in a classroom, you're helping children unlock a brighter future.

Your presence brings immediate relief to understaffed schools, offering individualised support to students who need it most. Many of these children come from challenging backgrounds, and having someone believe in their potential—whether through a maths game or a listening ear—makes a deep impact.

You’ll introduce creative teaching methods, build confidence in young learners, and bring global perspectives that broaden horizons. Some students will be learning about your home country for the very first time through you.

At the same time, you’ll gain valuable insight into the realities of education in a low-resource setting, build classroom management and communication skills, and develop empathy and cultural awareness that stays with you for life.

You’re not just teaching—you’re inspiring. And the knowledge, compassion, and encouragement you leave behind will ripple through the lives of students long after you’ve returned home.

  • Your Home in Uganda

During your placement, you'll stay in safe, welcoming accommodation arranged by our trusted local partner. Options include a volunteer guesthouse or homestay with a local Ugandan family—each offering an authentic experience of daily life and culture.

    Volunteer Guesthouse

Most volunteers stay in a shared volunteer house located close to the project sites. Rooms are shared (single-gender), with basic but comfortable furnishings, mosquito nets, and shared bathrooms. The guesthouse has communal areas for relaxing, planning lessons, and socialising with fellow volunteers.

    Homestay Option

For those seeking a more immersive experience, homestays are available. Living with a Ugandan family offers deeper cultural connection, home-cooked meals, and meaningful interactions with the local community.

    What’s Provided
    • Clean bedding and mosquito nets
    • Access to running water and basic shower facilities
    • Shared kitchen (if in the volunteer house)
    • Daily meals or grocery support depending on location
    • Wi-Fi access may be limited—come prepared to unplug

This is simple, sustainable living—designed to keep you comfortable while ensuring your stay supports the community you're serving.

  • History

Our trusted local partner in Uganda began with a simple but powerful mission: to uplift children, youth, and women affected by HIV/AIDS, abuse, and poverty. Operating in Mukono and neighbouring districts, they’ve grown into a vital community-driven organisation focused on empowering the next generation through education, skills training, and emotional support. What started as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a dedicated network of Ugandan change-makers working across education, health, and economic opportunity.

This organisation functions like a family—independent individuals unified in purpose, offering support to those most in need. With over a decade of impact, they’ve helped vulnerable children access basic needs, mentored young women toward self-sufficiency, and equipped thousands of youth with the tools to shape a better future.

    Mission & Vision

The vision is clear: a society where child rights are respected and all children live dignified lives.

To achieve this, the organisation works to economically and socially empower families and communities to holistically address child rights. Their mission extends beyond charity—it’s about building sustainable systems of care and opportunity. Through community-based development, job training, youth entrepreneurship, and access to mentorship, they ensure that children and families can rise from vulnerability to independence.

This is not just about short-term aid. It’s about long-term empowerment—equipping the next generation with the skills, confidence, and support to thrive.
