Want to volunteer in sustainable agriculture in Kenya? Our Travel Roots sustainable agriculture program is designed to tackle food insecurity issues by implementing sustainable practices to grow food and futures in Kenya.
Food insecurity remains a major issue in many parts of Kenya, especially in rural and low-income urban areas. This sustainable agriculture program connects volunteers with schools, families, and youth to promote food self-sufficiency and empower communities through hands-on farming practices.
You’ll get your hands dirty—literally—by planting crops, building gardens, tending chickens, and sharing simple techniques that can make a huge impact on health, nutrition, and income generation. Whether you’re teaching urban gardening in Nairobi or helping set up a backyard farm in a rural village, your efforts will sow seeds of real change.
This is a great opportunity for those passionate about sustainability, environmental education, or simply reconnecting with nature through meaningful, practical work.
Key Activities:
Assist with planting, weeding, harvesting, and composting in local gardens and farms
Help build chicken coops and manage small livestock care
Support school food gardens to improve child nutrition
Teach and promote backyard farming for low-income families
Empower unemployed youth with practical agricultural skills
By volunteering on our Sustainable Agriculture program, you will:
Help families and schools grow their own food and improve nutrition
Promote eco-friendly farming techniques and reduce environmental harm
Work directly with communities on long-term food security solutions
Support unemployed youth with skills for self-sufficiency and income generation
Experience life on the land while contributing to a healthier, greener future

Clean tools, water the last rows, and reflect on the day’s progress. Often, this is when locals share stories, tips, or future planting plans.Evenings & Days Off
Evenings are peaceful—ideal for journaling, relaxing, or enjoying home-cooked meals with your host family. Weekends are great for exploring nearby farms, parks, or city markets.Your Impact as a Volunteer
Food is more than a necessity—it’s a tool for health, empowerment, and sustainability. As a sustainable agriculture volunteer, you’ll help individuals and families grow what they eat, reduce dependence on aid, and take back control of their nutrition.
Your work directly supports schools in feeding their students, families in nourishing their children, and unemployed youth in creating livelihoods through farming. Every seed planted and skill shared becomes a step toward food security and ecological balance.
This is hands-in-the-soil volunteering that creates real change—harvest by harvest, one garden at a time.
Your Home in Kenya
As a volunteer, you'll stay with a trusted local host family in a quiet residential area near your placement—whether in Nairobi, Maasai, Nakuru or Kisumu. These homestays offer a warm, welcoming base where you can rest, reflect, and feel part of the community.
Rooms are shared with fellow volunteers and include basic essentials such as a bed, mosquito net, and fan. Bathrooms may be private or shared depending on the location.

Shared bedroom with bedding and mosquito net
Bathroom with running water or bucket shower (depending on the area)
Three traditional home-cooked meals per day
Filtered water, tea, and basic snacks
Laundry access (self-service or small local fee)
Wi-Fi available in most urban areas
Evenings are a chance to unwind with your host family, learn local customs, or simply enjoy the quiet moments after a meaningful day of service.
History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
