  • Want to take part in saving one of the world’s most iconic and endangered marine species? Our Travel Roots save the turtles program places you on Costa Rica’s stunning Pacific coastline, where you’ll join frontline conservation efforts to protect sea turtles, restore nesting beaches, and educate local communities.

As a volunteer, you’ll work alongside local biologists and conservationists during turtle nesting and hatching seasons. Key activities include patrolling beaches at night to protect nests from predators and poachers, collecting vital data, relocating eggs to hatcheries, and releasing hatchlings safely back into the sea.

This is hands-on, meaningful work that connects you deeply to nature. Your presence supports the survival of species such as the Olive Ridley, Leatherback, and Green sea turtles—some of which are critically endangered. In addition to fieldwork, you’ll also assist with beach clean-ups, community outreach, and educational workshops to promote sustainable coexistence.

    Key Activities Include:

    • Night patrols to monitor and protect nesting turtles
    • Egg collection and relocation to secure hatcheries
    • Hatchling release support
    • Recording scientific data on nesting activity
    • Beach cleanups and plastic pollution reduction
    • Supporting local conservation awareness programs

Your time on the coast won’t just protect turtles—it will transform your understanding of conservation and your role in it.

  • By volunteering on our Save the Turtles Conservation Program in Costa Rica, you will:

    • Protect endangered sea turtles during their critical nesting and hatching seasons
    • Patrol beaches at night and witness mother turtles laying eggs under the stars
    • Help ensure hatchlings reach the ocean safely and avoid predators
    • Contribute to long-term conservation data and global efforts
    • Support environmental education in coastal communities
    • Live and work by the beach in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth
    • Gain hands-on field experience in marine biology and sustainable practices
    • Be part of a passionate, global community working toward ocean protection

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Turtle Conservation Volunteer

This program revolves around the rhythm of nature—especially during turtle nesting season—so your days may vary based on tides and turtle activity. Be prepared for both daytime conservation tasks and rewarding night patrols under the stars.

7:00 AM – Breakfast at the Volunteer House
Start your morning with fresh tropical fruits, local bread, and coffee shared with fellow volunteers.

    8:00 AM – Morning Tasks
Begin the day by participating in activities like beach cleanups, data entry, or hatchery maintenance. Depending on the season, you might also help with early-morning hatchling releases.

    11:00 AM – Free Time & Lunch
Take time to relax by the beach, swim, or explore nearby nature trails. Lunch is usually self-prepared or cooked by the volunteer team using local ingredients.

2:00 PM – Conservation Workshops / Community Outreach
Support community education sessions or join workshops on marine conservation, turtle biology, or sustainable living practices.

    4:00 PM – Rest & Recharge
Enjoy free time in the late afternoon—perfect for journaling, reading, or beachside yoga.

8:00 PM – Night Patrol Begins
Gear up with headlamps and red lights for evening beach patrols. You’ll walk along the shore (in shifts) to protect nesting mothers, collect data, or relocate vulnerable eggs to hatcheries.

    Midnight – Return to Camp
After your shift, return to camp for a well-earned rest, knowing your efforts have directly helped protect a species on the brink.

    Weekends
Weekends are typically free, giving you time to explore waterfalls, hot springs, or take weekend trips to nearby towns and national parks.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

Sea turtles have swum the world’s oceans for over 100 million years—but today, they face extinction from pollution, climate change, poaching, and habitat loss. Your presence on this program helps turn the tide.

Every beach patrol you take part in, every egg you help relocate, and every hatchling you safely guide to the sea directly supports the survival of these ancient creatures. Your data contributions inform global conservation strategies, while your work in the local community raises awareness and drives change from the ground up.

But your impact reaches far beyond the shoreline. You’re also investing in your own growth—developing practical conservation skills, building resilience, and connecting deeply with a cause greater than yourself. This is an opportunity to be part of something that truly matters, and the legacy of your time here will ripple across oceans and generations.

  • Your Beachside Base

Volunteers stay in rustic, shared accommodation just steps from the ocean—offering a peaceful, immersive setting surrounded by nature. The housing is basic but comfortable, built to align with the conservation principles of the program.

    Sleeping Arrangements
Rooms are shared with fellow volunteers, usually in dormitory-style housing with fans and mosquito nets. Bedding is provided, and there’s a focus on community living—expect shared spaces and collaborative routines.

    Facilities & Amenities
    • Shared bathrooms with cold-water showers
    • Communal kitchen for self-catering or group cooking
    • Limited but reliable electricity and Wi-Fi access
    • Outdoor areas for yoga, journaling, or socialising
    • Storage space for personal items and gear

    Meals & Living
Volunteers often take turns cooking meals or preparing food together with locally sourced ingredients. Rice, beans, fresh fruit, and vegetables are staples. You’ll have access to local markets and small shops in nearby villages for snacks or extras.

This is an opportunity to unplug from daily distractions and connect with nature, your fellow volunteers, and the rhythms of coastal life. Simple, meaningful, and truly off-the-grid.

  • History

Since 2004, our trusted local partners have welcomed volunteers from around the world to support both ecological and social change across Costa Rica. What began as a small, family-run initiative has grown into a network of deeply impactful programs rooted in compassion, community, and action. With bases in Escazú (San José) and Playas del Coco (Guanacaste), they’ve built long-standing relationships with day care centres, schools, rescue centres, and conservation areas throughout the country.

Driven by the belief that meaningful change starts at the grassroots level, they’ve empowered hundreds of volunteers to become part of Costa Rica’s future—supporting children, wildlife, and local communities in ways that are ethical, sustainable, and heartfelt.

    Mission & Vision

Their mission is to make a tangible difference in the lives of Costa Rica’s people and animals by combining hands-on volunteer work with community-driven solutions. From nurturing young minds to protecting endangered wildlife, every project is powered by the spirit of collaboration and respect for Costa Rican culture.

They envision a world where volunteers are not just helpers—but catalysts for long-term impact. Your time, energy, and curiosity are met with open arms and total dedication. In return, they promise to support your journey with all the tools, knowledge, and heart they have—because together, real change is possible.
