Our Travel Roots Research Dive Master Program in the Philippines is our most advanced and professional marine conservation pathway.
This immersive two-to-three-month program is designed for individuals serious about pursuing a career in marine conservation science, professional diving, or both.
As a Research Dive Master Trainee, you will build upon the knowledge gained as a Research Assistant or Research Buddy and step confidently into leadership — both underwater and within research operations.
Professional dive leadership
Through the PADI Rescue Diver, Emergency First Response (EFR), and Divemaster certifications, you will gain the technical expertise and professional standards required to work as a scuba diving professional anywhere in the world.
Lead underwater research
You won’t just participate in surveys — you will confidently lead underwater training dives and research surveys. With advanced ecological knowledge and dive leadership skills, you will become a key figure in project execution and safety management.

What to Expect: A Week in the Life of a Research Dive Master
As a Research Dive Master Trainee, your role shifts from participant to professional-in-training.
This is an immersive, leadership-driven experience combining advanced marine research responsibilities with full PADI professional dive training. Your weeks will balance:
• Divemaster development
• Rescue & safety training
• Leading underwater research surveys
• Mentoring junior participants
• Data analysis & project oversightYou will be treated as part of the core dive and research team.
A Typical Week Structure
Participants usually arrive over the weekend, with the program beginning on Monday.
Monday – Planning & Professional Development
Weekly planning meetings, research briefings, and Divemaster training modules. You will assist in coordinating upcoming dives and reviewing safety protocols.
Tuesday – Skills & Leadership Training
In-water Divemaster exercises, rescue simulations, leadership drills, and supervised survey coordination practice.
Wednesday to Friday – Research & Dive Leadership
You will:
• Lead underwater surveys under supervision
• Support training of Research Buddies
• Assist with dive logistics and safety oversight
• Conduct or supervise data collection
• Participate in post-dive debriefs and analysisSaturday remains flexible for project needs or additional training. If objectives are met, it may become a fun-diving or advanced skills day.
Sunday is a rest day.

Your Home in the Philippines – Sierra Resort, Dauin
During your time on our Research Dive Master Program in the Philippines, you’ll stay at the trusted partner accommodation: Sierra Resort in Dauin — a comfortable beachfront base designed for both relaxation and recovery after full research days.
Room
Accommodation is provided on a shared basis, with two participants per room. Solo travellers will be matched with a same-sex roommate.If you prefer private occupancy, single rooms are available for an additional €89 per week.

Your placement is based in Dauin, a quiet coastal town just south of Dumaguete in the province of Negros Oriental.
Dauin is internationally recognised as one of the Philippines’ premier dive destinations, known for its thriving coral reefs, macro marine life, and healthy reef systems. The waters here form part of the Coral Triangle — the global epicentre of marine biodiversity.
You’ll be living directly on the beachfront at Sierra Resort, waking up to ocean views and walking just steps to the dive boat each morning. The relaxed coastal atmosphere makes it the perfect balance between focused conservation work and tropical island living.
Dumaguete, often called “The City of Gentle People,” is only a short drive away and offers cafés, markets, shopping malls, hospitals, and all essential amenities.

Your placement in Dauin offers the perfect balance between focused marine research and tropical adventure. On your days off — typically Sundays, and occasionally Saturdays — there is plenty to explore both above and below the surface.
