Monitor Apex Predators Using BRUVS
Apex predators such as reef sharks, large groupers, and other top-tier species play a critical role in maintaining reef health. By regulating prey populations, they help stabilise the entire ecosystem.
Using Baited Remote Underwater Video Surveillance (BRUVS) systems, volunteers assist in deploying and retrieving underwater camera rigs that record predator presence and behaviour without disturbing the marine environment.

What to Expect: A Week in Reef & Predator Monitoring
This program is field-based, data-driven, and focused on maintaining balance within reef ecosystems.
You’ll work alongside Marine Scientists to monitor apex predators using BRUVS systems and support invasive Crown of Thorns containment efforts. Every activity contributes directly to reef health assessment and conservation planning.
Participants typically arrive over the weekend, with the program beginning on Monday.
Monday – Orientation & Project Briefing
The week begins with an introduction to predator ecology, BRUVS methodology, and invasive species management strategies.
You’ll learn:
• The ecological importance of apex predators
• How BRUVS systems function
• Survey protocols and deployment procedures
• Crown of Thorns identification and containment proceduresDive equipment is reviewed and prepared in the afternoon.
Tuesday – Skills & Equipment Training
If required, you’ll complete in-water practice sessions to familiarise yourself with:
• BRUVS deployment techniques
• Safe containment and handling procedures
• Survey coordination
• Underwater observation protocolsWednesday to Friday – Active Field Research
These are core research days.
A typical day looks like this:
7:00 AM – Breakfast
8:00 AM – Equipment Preparation & Briefing
8:30 AM – Morning Dive Operations
Deploy BRUVS units or conduct structured predator surveys.
Participate in Crown of Thorns monitoring or removal dives when required.1:00 PM – Lunch
Afternoon – Data Processing & Analysis

Evenings are free for rest, study, or socialising.
Saturday – Contingency or Extended Research
Saturday remains open in case of weather disruption or additional data collection needs. If weekly objectives are achieved, this may become a recreational dive or rest day.
Sunday is a full rest day.

Your Home in the Philippines – Sierra Resort, Dauin
During your time on our reef and predator monitoring Program in the Philippines, you’ll stay at the trusted partner accommodation: Sierra Resort in Dauin — a comfortable beachfront base designed for both relaxation and recovery after full research days.
Room
Accommodation is provided on a shared basis, with two participants per room. Solo travellers will be matched with a same-sex roommate.If you prefer private occupancy, single rooms are available for an additional €89 per week.

Where You’ll Be – Dauin, Negros Oriental
Your placement is based in Dauin, a quiet coastal town just south of Dumaguete in the province of Negros Oriental.
Dauin is internationally recognised as one of the Philippines’ premier dive destinations, known for its thriving coral reefs, macro marine life, and healthy reef systems. The waters here form part of the Coral Triangle — the global epicentre of marine biodiversity.
You’ll be living directly on the beachfront at Sierra Resort, waking up to ocean views and walking just steps to the dive boat each morning. The relaxed coastal atmosphere makes it the perfect balance between focused conservation work and tropical island living.
Dumaguete, often called “The City of Gentle People,” is only a short drive away and offers cafés, markets, shopping malls, hospitals, and all essential amenities.
