Want to volunteer as a physiotherapy professional in Kenya? Our Travel Roots Physiotherapy program is designed to bring care to the margins and help restore movement and rebuild confidence.
If you’re a physiotherapy student or professional looking to use your skills for good, this program offers a truly meaningful way to give back. You’ll work alongside local physiotherapists in clinics, care homes, and special needs centres across Nairobi, Maasai Land, or Nakuru—helping individuals regain movement, independence, and dignity.
Your role will be hands-on, assisting patients with mobility exercises, rehabilitation routines, and adaptive strategies to support everyday life. With limited access to therapy services in many areas, your presence fills a vital gap and helps people of all ages live with greater strength and comfort.
Key Activities:
Support local therapists with rehabilitation and mobility training
Assist patients recovering from injury, illness, or surgery
Help assess patients’ needs and recommend tools or strategies for daily living
Provide physical and emotional encouragement throughout the healing process
Empower individuals with special needs to reach their physical potential
This is a powerful opportunity to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting—where your support can change someone’s day, mobility, and long-term outlook.
By volunteering on our Physiotherapy program, you will:
Work alongside experienced local therapists in care homes, clinics, and special needs centres
Help patients regain mobility, strength, and confidence after injury or illness
Apply your physiotherapy skills in resource-limited, high-impact settings
Gain valuable cross-cultural experience in community healthcare
Support individuals on their journey toward independence and improved quality of life

In many Kenyan communities, physiotherapy services are either limited or non-existent. As a volunteer, you help fill a vital gap—bringing physical support, encouragement, and professional care to individuals on their path to recovery.
Whether you’re working with a child who needs support with motor skills, or helping an elderly patient regain mobility after a fall, your hands-on guidance can make a lasting difference in someone’s independence and self-worth.
You’re not just helping people move better—you’re helping them live better. Through every stretch, step, and session, you’re rebuilding confidence, restoring function, and providing hope where it’s often needed most.
And while you’re giving your skills, you’ll also gain something meaningful in return—real-world experience, deep cultural exchange, and the chance to truly see the power of physical therapy in action.
Your Kenyan Home While You Heal and Help
As a physiotherapy volunteer, you’ll be welcomed into a carefully selected host family in either Nairobi, Nakuru, or Maasai Land—close to your placement site. Your homestay offers a peaceful, culturally rich home base where you can relax, reflect, and immerse yourself in local life.
Rooms are typically shared with other volunteers and come with basic comforts such as a mosquito net, fan (where available), and access to clean water and meals. Your host family will help you settle in and give you insight into Kenyan customs, meals, and community life.
What’s Included:
Shared room with bedding and mosquito net
Bathroom access (indoor or outdoor, depending on location)
Three nutritious meals per day prepared by your host
Filtered drinking water, tea, and snacks

Living with a host family offers a meaningful cultural exchange while giving you a safe and supportive space to unwind after a full day of patient care.
History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.

Wander vibrant markets filled with colourful fabrics, handmade crafts, and fresh tropical fruits. Each region has its own rhythm and charm.
Nature Walks and Village Tours
In rural areas, enjoy scenic walks through hills, farms, or open savannah. Spend time with locals, learn traditional skills, or visit nearby villages.
Beach Days in Mombasa
If you’re placed by the coast, unwind on white-sand beaches, take a dip in the Indian Ocean, or explore marine parks and islands.
Cultural Activities and Cooking Classes
Learn how to make chapati, mandazi, or ugali with your host family, or attend a community celebration, music night, or storytelling circle.
Wildlife Adventures and Safaris
Weekend trips can include visiting Nairobi National Park, Lake Nakuru, or Amboseli—each offering unforgettable wildlife viewing and landscapes.
Relax, Reflect, Reconnect
Sometimes the best moments are the quietest—reading in the garden, journaling under a mango tree, or stargazing far from city lights.
