  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

When you volunteer in Bukit Lawang, you're stepping into a vital role within a grassroots conservation movement. This isn’t a spectator experience—you’ll be shoulder-to-shoulder with local farmers, educators, and wildlife advocates, working to protect one of the most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems in the world.

From nurturing seedlings to monitoring wild orangutans, every action you take directly contributes to reversing deforestation, restoring degraded land, and fostering a future where both people and wildlife can thrive. By engaging the next generation in schools, empowering farmers with sustainable alternatives, and showing tourists the reality beyond the jungle trails, you become a voice for positive change.

Your impact will ripple out beyond the project site—through the forests you help replant, the minds you inspire, and the communities you support. And the experience you gain—whether in conservation, education, sustainable agriculture, or cross-cultural collaboration—will stay with you for life.

This is your chance to protect, educate, and restore—right where it matters most.

  • Your Home in the Rainforests of Sumatra

As a volunteer, you’ll live like a true local—immersed in the daily rhythms of a traditional North Sumatran farming family. • History

Nestled near the fringes of Gunung Leuser National Park, our partner project was established in direct response to the growing conflict between local farmers and the critically endangered wild orangutan population.

While millions of tourists trek to Bukit Lawang each year to witness semi-wild orangutans, few are aware of the deeper struggle happening just beyond the park’s borders—where truly wild orangutans live among agricultural lands and face daily threats from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

This grassroots project was born from the land itself—guided by a small group of local conservationists and farmers determined to make a difference. Their work began in the quiet, palm-oil-threatened corners of the Landak River and Batu Kapal areas, where they observed a need not only for wildlife protection but for deeper harmony between the people and the land.

Today, the initiative continues to grow—offering opportunities for volunteers to join a community-driven effort that champions biodiversity, sustainable farming, and long-term conservation impact.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is rooted in three key principles:

PROTECT, EDUCATE, and RESTORE. This includes both the protection of wildlife—especially wild orangutans—and the livelihoods of the farming communities who share their habitat.

Through habitat restoration, sustainable land management, environmental education, and alternative income streams, the project works to bridge the gap between urgent ecological needs and the everyday reality of rural life in Sumatra.

The long-term vision is a thriving corridor where orangutans can roam freely and farmers can prosper without resorting to palm oil monocultures. Volunteers are a vital part of this vision—bringing skills, energy, and compassion to help rewild the landscape and strengthen community resilience for generations to come.

Where You’ll Be – Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra

Tucked along the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, Bukit Lawang is a jungle-fringed riverside village that feels like a world away from city life. This is the heart of orangutan country—where wild forests hum with the sounds of gibbons, hornbills, and yes, orangutans swinging freely through the canopy.

Just a few hours from Medan, Sumatra’s capital, Bukit Lawang is accessible yet remote enough to retain its raw, untamed charm. Here, your days are framed by misty mountain mornings, muddy boots, and the calls of the jungle. You’ll be surrounded by vibrant green rice fields, palm-lined riverbanks, and a tight-knit local community whose warmth and hospitality will make you feel instantly at home.

You’ll live and work within smaller farming communities just outside the main tourist trail—places like Batu Kapal and along the Landak River—where the true conservation magic happens. These lesser-visited areas are also where truly wild orangutans roam, offering you a rare and privileged window into their world.
