  • Want to volunteer as a medical outreach professional in Kenya? Our Travel Roots medical outreach program is designed to bring care to the margins

This program is designed for qualified medical professionals who are passionate about sharing their skills and making a difference in underserved communities.

Access to healthcare is a basic right—but in rural Kenya, many communities still live far from clinics, resources, and vital medical knowledge. This mobile medical outreach program brings healthcare directly to those who need it most—villages where no permanent medical infrastructure exists.

You’ll work alongside Kenyan medical professionals and community health workers to provide basic care, education, and life-changing support. From blood pressure checks to hygiene awareness, your work will help bridge the gap between neglect and care.

This program is project-based and runs depending on available funding and volunteer numbers. If you’d like to participate, you’ll be invited to assist with light fundraising efforts to help sponsor a medical camp. The length of the outreach depends on how much funding is secured—but every day counts.

    Key Activities:

    • Assist in diagnosing and treating basic health conditions in rural villages

    • Support local medics during patient consultations and mobile clinics

    • Provide public health education on hygiene, disease prevention, and sanitation

    • Help lead nutrition and wellness workshops for families

    • Distribute sanitary products and health supplies to women and girls

This is a unique opportunity to bring healthcare into the heart of underserved communities—using your compassion, experience, and energy to change lives far beyond clinic walls.

  • By volunteering on our Medical Outreach program, you will:

    • Bring healthcare directly to remote villages with little or no access to medical services

    • Work alongside experienced Kenyan medical professionals in grassroots mobile clinics

    • Deliver education on hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention to underserved communities

    • Provide vital support and dignity to women and girls through sanitary product distribution

    • Be part of a program that saves lives and strengthens entire communities

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Medical Outreach Volunteer

Medical outreach days are busy, eye-opening, and incredibly rewarding. You’ll travel to rural communities, set up mobile clinics, and help deliver essential care and health education to people who rarely see a doctor.

6:30 AM – Early Start and Travel to Outreach Site
Begin your day with breakfast, then travel with the outreach team—sometimes up to 2 hours—to a rural village or remote location.

    9:00 AM – Set-Up and Team Briefing
Help set up the mobile clinic: tents, tables, registration areas, and basic treatment spaces. Join a short briefing with the medical team and community health workers.

9:30 AM – Clinic Operations Begin
Assist with patient registration, take vitals, record basic health information, or shadow local medical staff during diagnosis and treatment.

12:30 PM – Lunch and Rest Break
Enjoy a packed lunch on site, often shared under the shade of a tree or simple shelter.

    1:30 PM – Health Education & Distribution
Run or assist in educational sessions focused on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and reproductive health. Help distribute sanitary pads, soap, and information materials.

3:30 PM – Clinic Wrap-Up and Community Farewell
Help pack down the mobile clinic, ensure supplies are stored, and share a final moment with the community—often filled with gratitude and smiles.

    Evenings & Days Between Camps
Spend time relaxing with your host family, or help prepare for upcoming outreach days—organising materials, assisting with fundraising, or visiting local partners.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

In places where the nearest clinic may be hours away—or non-existent—your presence is more than helpful, it’s life-changing. As a medical outreach volunteer, you become part of a mobile team that brings healthcare directly into the hands of those who need it most.

You’ll provide basic services that many in these rural communities have never had access to—like health checks, wellness education, and dignified support for women and girls. You’ll help prevent illness, promote hygiene, and plant seeds of long-term health awareness.

This is hands-on, grassroots health work that doesn't just treat symptoms—it builds trust, spreads knowledge, and shows communities they haven't been forgotten.

Your care will echo far beyond your time on the ground.

  • Your Home in Kenya

As a medical outreach volunteer, you'll stay with a trusted local host family in a quiet residential area near your placement—whether in Nairobi, Maasai, Nakuru or Kisumu. These homestays offer a warm, welcoming base where you can rest, reflect, and feel part of the community.

Rooms are shared with fellow volunteers and include basic essentials such as a bed, mosquito net, and fan. Bathrooms may be private or shared depending on the location.

    What’s Included:

    • Shared bedroom with bedding and mosquito net

    • Bathroom with running water or bucket shower (depending on the area)

    • Three traditional home-cooked meals per day

    • Filtered water, tea, and basic snacks

    • Laundry access (self-service or small local fee)

    • Wi-Fi available in most urban areas

Evenings are a chance to unwind with your host family, learn local customs, or simply enjoy the quiet moments after a meaningful day of service.

  • History

Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.

What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.

Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.

Whether you're in the buzz of the capital, along the Indian Ocean coast, surrounded by the traditions of the Maasai, or in a peaceful Rift Valley town, one thing remains the same: a warm welcome and a strong sense of community.

These locations are rich in contrast. You'll see children learning in both concrete classrooms and thatched community centres, often with limited resources but endless enthusiasm. Each setting brings its own daily rhythm, challenges, and rewards.

From urban energy to rural calm, you’ll be immersed in a way of life that celebrates simplicity, connection, and resilience—making your volunteer experience as personally transformative as it is impactful.
