Our Travel Roots Global Climate & Community Leadership Program in St Vincent & The Grenadines & Malawi is built around two core principles: sustainable development and international collaboration. This is a fully immersive, long-term experience designed for those ready to step into a meaningful role tackling real-world environmental and social challenges.
This 10-month journey is structured into three distinct phases, each designed to progressively build your knowledge, confidence, and impact.
Phase 1 – Training at Richmond Vale Academy (3 Months)
Your journey begins at Richmond Vale Academy, where you’ll take part in an intensive training period focused on both personal development and practical skills.
You’ll be guided by experienced team leaders through a dynamic learning environment that combines:
Interactive workshops and lectures
Group discussions and team collaboration
Independent study and research
Practical, hands-on field activities
During this phase, you’ll develop the mindset, knowledge, and adaptability needed to contribute effectively to international development projects. You’ll also become part of a close-knit, global team, all working towards a shared purpose.
As your training progresses, you’ll be introduced to potential project placements in countries such as Malawi or Zambia. You’ll connect with your future project leaders, gaining a clear understanding of your upcoming role, responsibilities, and the community you’ll be supporting.
Phase 2 – International Field Project (6 Months)
In the second phase, you and your team will travel to your assigned project location, where you’ll fully immerse yourself in community-based development work.
Here, you’ll work alongside local teams and community members to address key environmental and social challenges. Projects may include:
Supporting sustainable agriculture initiatives
Assisting in education and youth development programs
Contributing to environmental conservation efforts
Engaging in community-led development activities
This phase is where your learning truly comes to life. You’ll gain hands-on experience, develop transferable skills, and build meaningful relationships within the community.
Phase 3 – Reflection & Knowledge Sharing (1 Month)
The final phase brings you back into a reflective and creative space.
You’ll take time to process everything you’ve experienced, learned, and contributed throughout the program. This stage focuses on:
Reflecting on your personal and professional growth
Sharing your experiences through presentations or creative projects
Inspiring others through your journey and impact
Whether through talks, workshops, or creative storytelling, this phase allows you to extend your impact beyond the field—creating a ripple effect of awareness and change.

What to Expect: A Day in the Life
Life on this program is structured, purposeful, and deeply immersive. Your daily routine will evolve depending on which phase of the program you are in, but all stages combine learning, practical work, and shared community living.
During your training phase at Richmond Vale Academy, a typical day may begin with a shared breakfast before moving into a mix of classroom-based learning and hands-on activities. Mornings often include workshops, lectures, or group discussions focused on sustainability, development, and leadership.
Afternoons are more practical and may involve:
Working on ecological projects such as gardening or environmental initiatives
Participating in team-based tasks and skill-building exercises
Contributing to the daily running of the academy through shared responsibilities
You’ll live as part of a community, meaning everyone contributes to daily life — from preparing meals and cleaning to supporting one another as a team.
During your international field project phase, your days will shift to reflect the needs of the local community and project. This could include:
Supporting education or youth development programs
Assisting with sustainable agriculture or environmental work
Engaging directly with local communities and project teams
No two days are the same, but each one is rooted in meaningful contribution and real-world impact.
In your final reflection phase, your routine becomes more flexible, allowing time to process your experience, prepare presentations, and share your journey with others.
Throughout the entire program, there is a strong balance between structure and adaptability — ensuring you are constantly learning, contributing, and growing.
Your Impact as a Volunteer
As part of our Global Climate & Community Leadership Program in St Vincent & The Grenadines and Malawi, your impact goes far beyond your time on the ground.
During your training, you’ll build the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute effectively to real-world challenges. This foundation ensures that when you enter your field placement, you are not just observing — you are actively supporting ongoing, long-term initiatives.
In your international project phase, your contribution may include:
Supporting sustainable agriculture practices that improve food security
Assisting in educational programs that empower children and young people
Contributing to environmental conservation and climate resilience efforts
Working alongside communities to strengthen local development initiatives
Your presence helps provide additional capacity, fresh perspectives, and continued momentum to projects that are already making a difference.
But your impact doesn’t stop there.
Through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and cultural exchange, you become part of a much bigger movement — helping to spread awareness, inspire others, and contribute to a more sustainable and connected world.
At the same time, the impact on you is just as powerful.
You’ll leave with:
Practical, transferable skills
A deeper understanding of global challenges
Increased confidence and independence
A new perspective on community, sustainability, and your role within it
This is not just volunteering — it’s a long-term investment in both global impact and your own personal growth.

Community Living
A key part of your experience here is collective living.

Cleaning communal spaces
Supporting kitchen duties such as dishwashing
Contributing to the general upkeep of the academy
This approach builds strong team connections and reflects the program’s focus on collaboration and sustainability.

Vegetarian and vegan options are available, with fruit often provided between meals.

Phase 3 – Reflection & Knowledge Sharing
In your final month, accommodation arrangements may vary depending on where your reflection phase is held, but will continue to follow a shared, community-focused setup.
History
Our trusted partner was established in 2002 as a registered non-profit organisation in St Vincent & The Grenadines, with the aim of supporting communities in responding to the growing challenges of climate change.
Since opening its doors to international participants in 2007, the organisation has worked closely with local communities, government bodies, and volunteers from around the world. Together, they have developed and implemented a wide range of climate adaptation and sustainability projects across the region.
Located in a rural part of St Vincent, the organisation has created a unique learning environment that combines education, practical experience, and community living. Over the years, it has become a recognised centre for sustainability training and environmental action within the Caribbean.
Mission & Vision
The organisation’s mission is to build the capacity, knowledge, and confidence of individuals from both St Vincent and around the world, empowering them to take action towards a more just and sustainable future.
Their work focuses on preparing communities for the impacts of climate change through practical, long-term solutions. Key areas include food and water sustainability, renewable energy, environmental protection, and community education.
Through a “learning by doing” approach, participants are encouraged to engage fully in both study and practical work — developing skills in ecological farming, resource management, and community engagement.
The organisation aims to create future leaders who are equipped not only with knowledge, but with the experience and mindset needed to contribute to sustainable development on both a local and global scale.

Where You'll Be: St Vincent & The Grenadines
Our Climate & Sustainability Program is based in St Vincent & The Grenadines, a small Caribbean island nation known for its natural beauty, strong sense of community, and rich cultural heritage.
The country consists of the main island of St Vincent and a collection of smaller islands and cays, many of which are home to local communities and unique ecosystems. English is the official language, with Vincentian Creole widely spoken among locals.
The program takes place in a rural coastal area, surrounded by rainforest, mountains, and the Caribbean Sea. This setting offers a peaceful and immersive environment, but also means that infrastructure can be more limited compared to urban areas.
St Vincent is considered a welcoming and generally safe destination, with strong local connections and community support. However, like many countries, it is important to remain aware of your surroundings and follow local guidance and safety advice provided during the program.
The region is increasingly affected by climate change and natural events such as hurricanes, making it a meaningful location for sustainability-focused work and community resilience projects.
Participants will receive a full safety and orientation briefing on arrival, covering local customs, safety guidelines, and expectations for living and working within the community.
