Want to volunteer as a foreign language teacher in Kenya? Our Travel Roots foreign language teaching program will allow you to
help open doors through language.
As the world becomes more connected, the ability to speak a second (or third) language is no longer just a bonus—it’s a real advantage in education, employment, and global communication. This program invites volunteers to teach French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Arabic, or English to students in Kenyan schools, depending on their skills and background.
You’ll be placed in a school in Nairobi, Mombasa, or Nakuru, where students are eager to learn new languages as part of their personal growth and professional preparation. Many will be learning from scratch, while others will benefit from conversational practice, games, and structured lessons.
Whether you’re fluent in one of these languages or have teaching experience in foreign language education, your role will be to support local teachers, create interactive lessons, and help young learners discover the joy and opportunity of multilingualism.
Key Activities:
Teach vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation through creative lesson plans
Lead conversation groups or language games to boost confidence and fluency
Help students with writing, listening comprehension, and speaking practice
Create flashcards, worksheets, or visual aids to support learning
Support teachers with class preparation, marking, and student engagement
This program is ideal for anyone passionate about language, education, and cross-cultural connection—and offers a meaningful way to share your skills while helping shape globally-minded students.
By volunteering on our Teaching Foreign Language program, you will:
Support students in learning globally valuable languages like French, Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic
Help improve communication, confidence, and cultural understanding in the classroom
Gain hands-on experience teaching in real-world school settings
Encourage curiosity and creativity through games, stories, and conversation
Empower students to pursue future opportunities in education, travel, and the job market

History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
