Want to volunteer in elderly care in Kenya? Our Travel Roots elderly care program is designed to bring care to compassion in action.
In many parts of Kenya, the elderly are among the most overlooked and vulnerable members of society. Whether due to poverty, illness, or isolation, many seniors live without the support they need to age with dignity.
This volunteer program places you in day-care centres and residential homes for the elderly, where you’ll offer not just care—but kindness, connection, and conversation. You don’t need to be a medical professional to make a difference. If you have a caring heart and a desire to help, you’re already halfway there.
Your support could mean helping someone eat, walking with them for daily exercise, or simply sitting beside them and listening to their stories. These small, everyday acts of compassion are life-giving for people who’ve spent decades caring for others.
Key Activities:
Provide companionship and emotional support
Assist with personal hygiene, bathing, and dressing
Support feeding routines and meal preparation
Help with housekeeping and keeping the environment clean
Escort residents to medical appointments or outdoor walks
Encourage physical movement and simple therapeutic activities
By volunteering on our elderly care program, you will:
Offer emotional companionship and genuine connection to elderly residents
Assist with daily routines such as hygiene, meals, and mobility
Create a warm, respectful, and supportive environment for ageing with dignity
Support overworked caregivers and help ease their daily responsibilities
Experience the wisdom, stories, and gratitude of a generation often forgotten

Ageing can be lonely—but your presence can change that. As a volunteer in an old age home, you offer more than support with meals or hygiene—you offer comfort, dignity, and companionship to those who often feel forgotten.
Your daily efforts help lighten the load for caregivers, improve the emotional wellbeing of residents, and create a nurturing space where elders feel valued and seen. Whether you’re helping someone walk again after illness or simply holding their hand during a quiet moment, your impact is deeply felt.
This is a role rooted in kindness, patience, and human connection—and one that reminds us all of the power of showing up for others.

Shared bedroom with bedding and mosquito net
Bathroom with running water or bucket shower (depending on the area)
Three traditional home-cooked meals per day
Filtered water, tea, and basic snacks
Laundry access (self-service or small local fee)
Wi-Fi available in most urban areas
Evenings are a chance to unwind with your host family, learn local customs, or simply enjoy the quiet moments after a meaningful day of service.
History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.

If you’re placed by the coast, unwind on white-sand beaches, take a dip in the Indian Ocean, or explore marine parks and islands.
Cultural Activities and Cooking Classes
Learn how to make chapati, mandazi, or ugali with your host family, or attend a community celebration, music night, or storytelling circle.
Wildlife Adventures and Safaris
Weekend trips can include visiting Nairobi National Park, Lake Nakuru, or Amboseli—each offering unforgettable wildlife viewing and landscapes.
Relax, Reflect, Reconnect
Sometimes the best moments are the quietest—reading in the garden, journaling under a mango tree, or stargazing far from city lights.
