Our Travel Roots Communications & Digital Marketing Internship in Costa Rica offers a unique opportunity to support wildlife conservation through storytelling, content creation, and digital strategy.
Working alongside the communications team, you will contribute to how conservation work is shared with the world — helping raise awareness, attract support, and strengthen the impact of ongoing rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts.
Throughout your placement, you will be involved in planning, creating, and managing content across multiple platforms. This includes writing captions, blogs, newsletters, and press-style communications, as well as producing visual content such as photos and videos that reflect daily life at the centre.
You will also support ongoing campaigns, including awareness initiatives and online fundraising efforts, helping communicate important conservation messages in an engaging and responsible way. Collaboration is a key part of the role, working closely with veterinary, rescue, and education teams to ensure all content is accurate, ethical, and aligned with the organisation’s values.
The internship follows a structured weekly format:
• 3 days per week focused on communications and digital marketing (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
• Optional participation in general volunteer activities on additional days
• 2 days off per weekThis blended approach allows you to not only build practical marketing experience, but also gain a deeper understanding of the conservation work behind the content.
Requirments
This internship requires a minimum commitment of 12 weeks, making it ideal for those looking to gain meaningful, in-depth experience and build a strong portfolio within conservation communications.
This program is well suited for individuals pursuing or interested in careers such as communications, digital marketing, journalism, photography, or media within the conservation and environmental sector.
Required skills
- Minimum 18 years old
- English level B2 (Spanish is a plus)
- Excellent writing skills with interest and basic knowledge in marketing, wildlife, and conservation
- Experience managing social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube)
- Ability to generate creative ideas and adapt content to different platforms and audiences
- Well organized, proactive, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of content creation tools: Canva, CapCut, and Adobe Creative Cloud (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro)
- Photography and video creation skills with demonstrable experience
- Basic understanding of social media analytics and performance metrics (engagement, reach, insights)
- Familiar with digital tools such as Mailchimp, Gmail, and Google Drive
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Sensitivity and respect when communicating about wildlife rescue and conservation topics

Every day on our Communications & Digital Marketing Internship in Costa Rica combines creativity with purpose, giving you the opportunity to share real conservation stories with a global audience.
Example Day
7:30 AM – Start your day with breakfast and prepare for your scheduled tasks.
8:00 AM – Begin your communications-focused work:
• Plan and organise upcoming content across social media platforms
• Write captions, blog posts, newsletters, or campaign content
• Review and update existing content to improve quality and consistency10:30 AM – Content creation and collaboration:
• Capture photos and videos that reflect daily life at the rescue centre
• Work alongside different teams to gather accurate and meaningful stories

Volunteers stay in a comfortable hostel located directly next to the rescue centre, providing easy access to your daily placement while living alongside fellow volunteers from around the world.

Our trusted conservation partner is a licensed wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre based on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, founded in 2008 in response to increasing numbers of injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals in the region.
What began as a small, personal effort by two wildlife specialists quickly grew as more animals were brought to them by local communities and authorities. As demand increased, the project expanded from a home-based rescue into a fully established centre, now covering approximately 22,000 square metres and capable of supporting a wide range of native species.
Over the years, the centre has rescued more than 9,000 wild animals, with approximately 48% successfully rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitats. Today, it operates as a critical part of the region’s wildlife response network, regularly receiving animals from local authorities including police, coast guard, and environmental agencies.
