Provide daily care and habitat maintenance for rescued deer

Choose from 1 to 15 weeks

Eco‑camp – shared cabin

Up to 8 hours per day
2 days off per week

  • Want to support wildlife rescue efforts in an idyllic coastal setting? Our Travel Roots Deer Care Program in Mexico places you in La Ventanilla, a community-run conservation site near Mazunte, where rescued deer are rehabilitated in a protected Environmental Management Unit (UMA).

As a volunteer, you’ll prepare and distribute food, monitor health, count individuals, replenish water, and clean their habitat in the mornings. After lunch and some rest, you return to continue care—feeding, habitat maintenance, and community-led beach or natural area cleanups.

Living steps from the ocean, you’ll work hand-in-hand with local conservationists supporting other projects—crocodile care, turtle protection, and mangrove restoration—while fully immersing yourself in the rhythms of rural coastal life.

    Key activities:
    • Morning feeding, counting, health checks, and habitat cleaning
    • Afternoon care and water replenishment for deer
    • Beach and mangrove clean-up support
    • Interaction with broader wildlife activities in UMA

  • By joining our Deer Care Program in Mexico, you will:

    • Support rescued deer with daily feeding, health monitoring, and habitat care
    • Gain hands-on experience in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation
    • Live and volunteer in a coastal mangrove community next to Mazunte
    • Participate in conservation activities across multiple species and ecosystems
    • Build connections with passionate local guardians of biodiversity
    • Immerse yourself in Oaxacan culture while supporting community-led conservation

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Deer Care Volunteer in Mexico

Every day on our Deer Care Program in Mexico offers a blend of structured tasks and the peaceful rhythm of life in a conservation community. Your work focuses on supporting the health and well-being of rescued deer while contributing to broader environmental efforts.

7:00 AM – Start your morning with breakfast at the eco-camp, shared with fellow volunteers and local coordinators.

8:00 AM – Begin your primary duties:
    • Feed the rescued deer, ensuring each animal receives appropriate nutrition.
    • Conduct a head count and observe the deer for any signs of illness or injury, reporting to local staff if anything looks unusual.
    • Clean and maintain the deer enclosures, removing waste, refreshing bedding, and ensuring water supplies are clean and topped up.

11:00 AM – Take part in natural habitat maintenance or beach clean-ups alongside the community — helping protect the ecosystems that sustain both wildlife and local livelihoods.

12:30 PM – Enjoy a well-earned lunch and rest during the hottest hours of the day.

3:00 PM – Depending on local needs, your afternoon could include:
    • Providing a second round of feeding and water checks for the deer.
    • Assisting with habitat enrichment or repairs within the UMA (Environmental Management Unit).
    • Helping with other wildlife conservation activities in the area, such as mangrove restoration or turtle hatchery support during peak seasons.

6:00 PM – Dinner at camp, followed by time to relax, connect with the community, or enjoy a quiet walk along the beach.

Your days off are yours to explore: visit nearby Mazunte, discover the mangroves, enjoy local cultural activities, or simply take in the beauty of the coastal landscape.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

By volunteering on our Travel Roots Deer Care Program in Mexico, you play a vital role in the daily well-being and long-term rehabilitation of rescued deer that have been saved from illegal captivity or injury. Your care helps ensure these animals have a safe, clean, and enriched environment while they recover under the protection of the community-run conservation unit.

Your work supports far more than individual animals. By contributing to habitat maintenance, beach and mangrove clean-ups, and local conservation efforts, you help safeguard the broader ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife.

Beyond the environmental impact, your presence helps sustain community-led conservation models. You directly support eco-tourism and environmental education, showing how responsible tourism can generate fair, sustainable livelihoods while protecting biodiversity. The time, care, and energy you give leave a lasting legacy of compassion, collaboration, and positive change.

  • Your home on Mexico’s Pacific coast

Volunteers stay in a simple, eco-friendly camp located just meters from the beach. Designed for low-impact living, the camp offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature while supporting conservation efforts.

    Sleeping arrangements
You will be accommodated in shared wooden cabins or spacious tents, depending on availability and group size. Cabins and tents include basic bedding (mattress, sheet, and pillow). Accommodation is rustic but comfortable, offering an authentic experience close to the natural environment you’re helping to protect.

    What’s provided
    • Access to shared bathroom facilities with showers and toilets
    • Fresh drinking water
    • Three nutritious meals per day (vegetarian and vegan options available)
    • Communal dining and relaxation areas with shade
    • Simple electricity and lighting powered by solar energy

The camp is a communal and welcoming space where volunteers, local coordinators, and community members come together to share meals, stories, and the rewarding work of turtle conservation. Evenings often bring stunning sunsets and clear night skies, perfect for unwinding after a day’s efforts.

  • History

Our trusted partner for this program works with grassroots conservation groups along Mexico’s Pacific coast, protecting sea turtles through community-led initiatives. For over a decade, they have partnered with local families, indigenous communities, and conservation cooperatives to protect nesting beaches, operate hatcheries, and promote sustainable eco-tourism.

Their work arose from the need to reduce poaching and habitat destruction, while providing local communities with sustainable alternatives through ethical conservation tourism.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is to protect sea turtle populations through effective nest protection, habitat conservation, and community education. By combining conservation action with responsible eco-tourism, their projects aim to ensure that both wildlife and coastal communities can thrive together.

The vision is a future where marine wildlife is safeguarded by the very communities that share its habitat, creating lasting benefits for both people and nature along Mexico’s biodiverse Pacific coastline.
