Want to volunteer as a dance teacher in Nairobi, Kenya? Our Travel Roots dance teaching program is the perfect place to share the power of dance, inspire through movement and change lives in Kenya.
Dance is more than movement—it’s a form of expression, a source of joy, and a powerful way to build confidence and community. In the slums of Nairobi, especially in areas like Kibera, dance offers young people a creative outlet and a hopeful path forward. It’s a way to stay off the streets, avoid common risks like teen pregnancy or drug abuse, and dream beyond limitations.
This program is perfect for dancers and choreographers of any style who want to share their skills and learn from others. You’ll coach children, teens, and adults in community centres, helping them explore movement, rhythm, and performance.
In return, you’ll get to experience the richness of Kenyan traditional dances and the spirit of creativity that thrives even in the most challenging environments.
Key Activities:
Lead dance training sessions for children, teens, or adults
Teach choreography, coordination, and stage presence
Collaborate on performances or cultural events when possible
Exchange styles—learn Kenyan traditional and urban dance, and share your own techniques
Motivate youth through mentorship, creativity, and movement

Through movement, you’ll give young people a chance to express themselves, build discipline, and connect with something joyful and empowering. For many, your dance sessions will be the highlight of their day—a space where they’re encouraged to dream, lead, and shine.

History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
