  • What to Expect: A Day-by-Day Adventure on Our 18-Day Conservation Summer Camp in Iceland

This 18-day camp is the perfect mix of meaningful conservation work, unforgettable adventures, and a supportive group environment for teens. Every day is supervised by trained leaders, with activities designed to build confidence, teamwork, and real environmental awareness — all while exploring some of Iceland’s most iconic landscapes.

    Day 1 – Pick-Up & Welcome (Monday)
We welcome the group on arrival and travel together to the accommodation. Teens meet their leaders, get a tour of the area, and enjoy fun ice-breaker activities to settle in and make new friends. The evening is relaxed, with games, dinner, and a warm welcome talk to kick off the journey.

Day 2 – Golden Circle Adventure
A full-day adventure exploring Iceland’s world-famous natural wonders — geysers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes. Expect photography moments, trivia games, and a group picnic, making it the perfect bonding day early in the camp.

Day 3 – Transfer to Siglufjörður
A beautiful road trip heading north through Iceland’s stunning scenery. The group makes short stops for photos, snacks, and scenic viewpoints along the way before arriving in Siglufjörður.

    Days 4–5 – Forestry & Environmental Projects
The camp’s conservation work begins with hands-on forestry and environmental tasks such as tree planting, trail upkeep, and outdoor restoration projects. All activities are adapted for youth and supervised by trained leaders, helping teens learn responsibility, teamwork, and sustainability in action.

Afternoons include free time to relax, explore the town, or join optional group activities such as team games, cooking nights, sports, short hikes, or movie evenings.

Day 6 – Mývatn Adventure Day
One of the biggest highlights of the camp! The group explores the incredible landscapes of Mývatn, known for lava formations, geothermal areas, and scenery that feels like another planet.

    Day 7 – Hiking Day
A guided hiking day with safe routes, breathtaking views, and fun team-building activities along the way.

    Days 8–12 – Forestry Week
A full week of outdoor teamwork in the forests near Siglufjörður. Teens rotate tasks so everyone gets to try different roles and learn new skills. Evenings are packed with fun and community moments, including workshops, board games, sports, music nights, harbour walks, cooking together, local shop visits, and sunset walks.

Day 13 – Whale Watching & Akureyri Visit
A magical day out on the fjord for whale watching — often a favourite for all participants. Afterward, the group explores Akureyri, Iceland’s charming northern capital, with time for souvenirs and local snacks.

    Day 14 – Kayaking Day
Safe, guided kayaking in calm waters, designed for beginners. A great confidence-building activity that also strengthens teamwork — and of course, it’s seriously fun.

    Days 15–16 – Farewell Days
The final days in the north include reflection activities, group games, a small celebration, and preparing memory books or photo boards. Leaders guide the group in looking back on everything they achieved together.

Day 17 – Transfer to the Farm
A comfortable transfer back south, with music, games, and fun stops along the way to keep the journey exciting.

    Day 18 – Drop-Off at BSI
After an unforgettable camp, it’s time to say goodbye. Staff support the group through departure procedures and ensure every teen is safely dropped off.

This camp is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where teens don’t just visit Iceland — they become part of it, through conservation action, adventure, and friendships that last long after the final day.

  • Your Home in Iceland

During your time on our 18-Day Conservation Summer Camp in Iceland, you’ll be staying in a Worldwide Friends volunteer house — a welcoming, comfortable base where the group can relax, recharge, and enjoy the community side of camp life. The house includes a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and comfortable common areas where you can hang out together in the evenings, play games, or unwind after a busy day outdoors. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge, and there is also a washing machine on site to help you stay fresh throughout the camp.

    Food & Meals

All food is included for the full duration of the camp. Meals are prepared as a team effort, and everyone is expected to do their fair share of cooking and cleaning — it’s part of the fun and a big part of the group experience.

We provide a healthy, well-balanced variety of ingredients including whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. To reduce our carbon footprint, meat consumption is limited and sustainable, plant-based meals are encouraged during the camp.

Soft drinks and candies are not provided, but there are plenty of ingredients for baking delicious snacks — and as the team bakes their own bread, you’re welcome to bring your favourite golden-crust recipe from home too.

Please make sure you inform us in advance if you have any food allergies or special dietary needs, so we can accommodate you properly.

Where You’ll Be: Welcome to Siglufjörður in North Iceland

Our 18-Day Conservation Summer Camp is based in Siglufjörður, a small and beautiful town of around 1,300 people, located in North Iceland. It’s the northernmost town on Iceland’s mainland, surrounded by dramatic mountains on one side and the sea on the other — giving it that unforgettable fjord-town atmosphere you’ll never forget.

Siglufjörður is approximately a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík, and together with the neighbouring community of Ólafsfjörður, it forms part of the Municipality of Fjallabyggð.

This town is full of character and history. Once known as the “Herring Capital of the North,” Siglufjörður was one of Iceland’s most vibrant and prosperous towns during the early to mid-1900s. The herring fishing and processing boom brought people from across Iceland and beyond, creating a lively hub of culture, music, and strong community spirit.

Although the herring era ended in the 1960s, Siglufjörður has proudly preserved its maritime heritage through museums, restored buildings, and local traditions. Today, it’s a peaceful yet active town, loved for its stunning natural surroundings, strong historical identity, and deep connection to Iceland’s fishing roots.

Iceland – Land of Fire, Ice, and Wild Wonder

Iceland is one of the most unique countries on Earth — a place shaped by volcanoes, glaciers, and the powerful forces of nature. From steaming geothermal hot springs and dramatic black sand beaches, to towering waterfalls and endless mountain landscapes, it’s a destination that feels almost unreal. But Iceland isn’t just beautiful — it’s also deeply connected to sustainability and nature protection. Many communities across the country work hard to preserve their landscapes, reduce environmental impact, and inspire more responsible ways of living.

That’s what makes volunteering here so special.Whether you’re watching the sky glow during golden hour, hiking through untouched valleys, or sharing stories with your volunteer team after a day of hands-on work, Iceland has a way of grounding you — reminding you what really matters, and how powerful it feels to contribute to something meaningful in a place this extraordinary.
