  • Our Travel Roots Animal Care Program in Morocco is an ideal opportunity for animal lovers who want to make a tangible difference in the lives of stray, abandoned, or injured animals. Across many regions of Morocco, street animals face challenges including malnutrition, untreated illness, neglect, and overpopulation. Local shelters and rescue centres work tirelessly to respond—but they need extra hands.

As a volunteer, you’ll help provide daily care and attention to animals that have been rescued, while supporting outreach efforts that promote kindness, sterilisation, and responsible pet ownership. You may work with dogs, cats, donkeys, or even horses—depending on your placement and the current needs of the centre.

Tasks are hands-on and rewarding. You’ll assist with feeding, cleaning, socialising, grooming, and sometimes even supporting minor treatments or veterinary checks. You'll also help maintain clean and enriching shelter environments to improve the animals’ health and adoptability.

This program is perfect for compassionate, hardworking volunteers who don’t mind getting a little messy in the name of love and care.

    Key Activities:

    • Feeding and grooming rescued animals

    • Cleaning shelters, kennels, and enclosures

    • Assisting with treatments and vet checks (where applicable)

    • Walking and socialising dogs to improve behaviour and trust

    • Supporting local education and awareness campaigns

    • Helping improve shelter conditions and animal wellbeing

Whether you dream of working in animal welfare or simply want to support an often-overlooked cause, this program puts you on the front line of compassion.

  • By volunteering on Our Travel Roots Animal Care Program in Morocco, you will:
•Provide hands-on support to rescued and vulnerable animals
•Help improve living conditions in under-resourced shelters
•Gain practical experience in animal welfare and care
•Contribute to education efforts around animal rights and wellbeing
•Form heartwarming bonds with cats, dogs, donkeys, and more
•Live with a host family and experience daily Moroccan life
•Make a meaningful difference in a country where animal welfare is still evolving

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Animal Care Volunteer In Morocco

Each day on Our Travel Roots Animal Care Program in Morocco is rewarding, hands-on, and filled with tail wags, purrs, and purpose. You’ll spend your time at an animal shelter or sanctuary, assisting staff with daily care routines and making a visible difference to the animals' wellbeing.

    8:30 AM – Morning Cleaning & Feeding
Start the day by helping clean animal enclosures, refill water bowls, and prepare food. Feeding routines are often busy and full of excitement—especially from the dogs!

    10:00 AM – Health Checks & Enrichment
Assist staff with basic grooming, treatments, or check-ups (where allowed). Create simple enrichment toys or spend time socialising nervous or under-socialised animals.

    12:00 PM – Dog Walks & Interaction
Take dogs for walks or playtime to help improve their behaviour and readiness for adoption. For cats or smaller animals, quiet time and affection go a long way.

    1:30 PM – Break & Lunch
Return to your homestay or relax with staff for a well-earned break and meal.

Afternoons – Optional Project Work or Outreach
Some centres run workshops on responsible pet ownership or community education campaigns. Volunteers may also help improve shelter infrastructure—painting, repairs, or cleaning.

    Days Off
Use weekends to rest, join trips to the mountains or coast, or explore Moroccan medinas and markets. Your time off is the perfect balance to your fulfilling work during the week.

Whether it’s cleaning kennels or calming a scared kitten, each moment you spend helps restore dignity and hope to animals who’ve known hardship.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

Volunteering on Our Travel Roots Animal Care Program in Morocco offers you the chance to make a direct, visible difference in the lives of animals that have been neglected, abandoned, or mistreated. In communities where resources for animal welfare are limited, your care helps close the gap between survival and recovery.

Every meal you prepare, every kennel you clean, and every affectionate moment you share helps build trust and wellbeing. Your efforts not only improve animals’ physical health but also support their emotional healing—making them more adoptable and giving them a second chance at life.

Beyond the shelter walls, your work supports broader change. Through local outreach and education, you’ll help shift attitudes around responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, and compassion for animals.

And as you give your time to those who cannot speak for themselves, you’ll also gain perspective, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the role humans play in protecting the voiceless.

  • Your Home in Morocco

During your time on the program, you’ll be welcomed into a Moroccan homestay, where you'll live with a local family alongside fellow volunteers. This isn’t just a place to sleep—it’s a cultural immersion. You’ll gain a first-hand experience of daily Moroccan life, from shared meals to meaningful conversations and traditions passed down through generations.

    Sleeping Arrangements
Volunteers may have their own room or share with one or two others, depending on the homestay. All rooms are comfortable and equipped with the essentials. Moroccan homes are communal by nature, with shared living areas and traditional couches (known as sedari) used for both sitting and dining.

    Cultural Connection
Staying with a host family offers a rich opportunity to practice Darija (Moroccan Arabic dialect), try authentic home-cooked dishes like tagine and couscous, and engage in local customs. Your host family also receives support through your program fee, helping to empower local households while offering you a warm, inclusive space to call home.

  • History

This community-driven initiative was created to connect passionate volunteers with local associations, daycares, and grassroots organisations across Morocco—in cities like Rabat, Salé, Casablanca, and Marrakech. It began as a way to support underfunded projects by matching them with individuals from around the world who want to make a difference while experiencing life in North Africa.

By working directly with local partners, this platform ensures that every volunteer placement is meaningful and well-supported. From early childhood centres to women’s empowerment initiatives, each collaboration focuses on real needs within the community and fosters long-term development through global exchange.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is simple: to create authentic, impactful volunteer experiences that benefit both the local communities and the volunteers themselves. With a strong belief in cultural exchange and mutual learning, the platform offers flexible project options across various social and educational fields.

Volunteers are encouraged to immerse themselves in Moroccan life—whether through Arabic or French language classes, local excursions, or living with a host family—while making a tangible contribution to community wellbeing. The vision is a world where travel is more than sightseeing; it’s about connection, contribution, and shared growth.

Your placement will be based in one of Morocco’s vibrant cities—Rabat, Salé, Casablanca, or Marrakech. Each location offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern life, with colourful medinas, bustling souks, and a rich cultural heritage around every corner.

Rabat, the capital city, is a relaxed coastal hub with palm-lined boulevards and centuries-old architecture. Its neighbour, Salé, offers a more traditional, local experience just across the river. Casablanca—the country’s economic centre—buzzes with energy, while Marrakech stuns with its red city walls, winding alleyways, and iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square.

No matter where you’re placed, you’ll be welcomed into a warm, friendly community that values connection, tradition, and generosity. Your homestay accommodation will be close to your volunteer site, giving you a true taste of daily Moroccan life.
