Our Travel Roots Adult Learning Program empowers adults who missed out on formal education with the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to build better futures.As a volunteer, you’ll support community-based learning initiatives focused on literacy, numeracy, vocational training, and life skills development.
Many adults—especially women—face barriers to education due to poverty, early marriage, or displacement. This program helps restore dignity and opportunity by providing accessible, inclusive learning environments. Your role may include teaching basic reading and writing, running digital literacy sessions, or helping adults improve their business and job-readiness skills.
No teaching background is required—just patience, encouragement, and a passion for empowering others.
Key Volunteer Activities:
• Teach or assist with basic literacy and numeracy classes
• Run sessions on practical life skills (e.g. budgeting, hygiene, communication)
• Support small group workshops in business skills, CV writing, or interview preparation

Your days as an adult education volunteer will revolve around flexible, informal learning sessions designed to meet the real needs of local community members. You’ll teach practical skills, build confidence, and form genuine connections.

Your Home in Uganda
During your placement, you'll stay in safe, welcoming accommodation arranged by our trusted local partner. Options include a volunteer guesthouse or homestay with a local Ugandan family—each offering an authentic experience of daily life and culture.
Volunteer Guesthouse
Most volunteers stay in a shared volunteer house located close to the project sites. Rooms are shared (single-gender), with basic but comfortable furnishings, mosquito nets, and shared bathrooms. The guesthouse has communal areas for relaxing, planning lessons, and socialising with fellow volunteers.
Homestay Option
For those seeking a more immersive experience, homestays are available. Living with a Ugandan family offers deeper cultural connection, home-cooked meals, and meaningful interactions with the local community.

Where You’ll Be – Life in Mukono District
Your placement is based in Uganda’s vibrant Mukono District, located just outside the country’s capital, Kampala. This semi-urban area offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with bustling local markets, friendly neighbours, and a strong sense of community spirit.
Surrounded by rolling hills, green farmland, and traditional villages, Mukono provides a perfect balance of convenience and rural charm. It’s a safe, peaceful area where you’ll feel right at home while having the chance to immerse yourself in daily Ugandan life. Whether you’re helping at the centre, greeting school children, or chatting with your host family, the warmth of the community is always present.
