Climate education & community sustainability

6 Months

  • Our Travel Roots Climate & Sustainability Program in St Vincent & The Grenadines is a long-term, immersive experience designed to equip participants with the knowledge, practical skills, and real-world understanding needed to respond to climate and sustainability challenges.

Based in a small Caribbean island nation increasingly affected by climate change and natural disasters, the program combines structured learning, practical project work, and community engagement to create meaningful, long-term impact.

The program follows a clear 6-month structure:

    Month 1 – Understanding Climate & Sustainability
You will begin with focused study and research into global warming, climate change, sustainability, and ecological farming. This phase builds a strong foundation, exploring both challenges and potential solutions for a more secure and sustainable future.

    Month 2 – Practical Learning & On-Site Projects
The focus shifts to applying knowledge through practical work. This may include supporting food production systems, expanding nursery capacity, and working on rainwater harvesting initiatives, while developing an understanding of ecological farming and community mobilisation.

    Months 3 & 4 – Community Engagement
You will work directly within local communities, contributing to sustainability-focused initiatives such as teaching in schools, planting trees, supporting families to grow food, and participating in environmental clean-ups. This phase offers valuable cultural exchange and real-world experience.

    Months 5 & 6 – Reflection, Action & Communication
In the final stage, you will consolidate your experience through reflection and deeper learning, while also designing and implementing your own projects. You will create communication outputs such as presentations, videos, or campaigns to share your experience and promote sustainable practices within communities.

Throughout the program, you will live and work as part of an international team, developing teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Before your arrival, a video call will be arranged with the program team to ensure expectations are aligned, answer any questions, and help you fully prepare for the experience ahead.

Upon completion, you will receive a Training Completion Certificate.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

Your role on this program contributes directly to supporting communities as they adapt to the growing challenges of climate change.

Through your involvement in education, practical projects, and community initiatives, you help strengthen local efforts around food security, environmental protection, and sustainable living. Whether supporting ecological farming, participating in environmental clean-ups, or contributing to community education, your work forms part of long-term, locally driven solutions.

By working alongside local communities, you also help share knowledge, ideas, and perspectives — creating a two-way exchange that strengthens both local impact and your own understanding of global sustainability challenges.

Beyond the immediate impact on the ground, the experience equips you with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to carry forward into your future. The aim is not only to support communities during your time in the program, but to enable you to continue contributing to sustainability efforts long after your placement ends.

  • Your Home in St Vincent

During your time on our Climate & Sustainability Program in St Vincent & The Grenadines, you will live within a shared community environment at the program campus.

Accommodation is simple and designed to support a collective way of living. Participants stay in shared rooms, typically with two people per room, across multiple residential corridors. Bathrooms are shared and separated by gender.

Rooms are basic, with a pillow provided, and participants are required to bring their own bedsheets (twin size). The setup encourages a focus on community, teamwork, and the overall experience rather than individual comfort.

Community living is a core part of the program.

Daily responsibilities are shared among participants and include tasks such as preparing breakfast, cleaning, and maintaining shared spaces. This creates a strong sense of teamwork and shared responsibility throughout your stay.

Lunch and dinner are prepared by on-site cooks, while breakfast is organised collectively. Three meals are provided each day, with vegetarian and vegan options available. Fresh fruit is also available between meals.

The campus offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, set within a natural environment close to the sea. Living here is an immersive experience, allowing you to fully engage with both the program and the surrounding environment.

  • History

Our trusted partner was established in 2002 as a registered non-profit organisation in St Vincent & The Grenadines, with the aim of supporting communities in responding to the growing challenges of climate change.

Since opening its doors to international participants in 2007, the organisation has worked closely with local communities, government bodies, and volunteers from around the world. Together, they have developed and implemented a wide range of climate adaptation and sustainability projects across the region.

Located in a rural part of St Vincent, the organisation has created a unique learning environment that combines education, practical experience, and community living. Over the years, it has become a recognised centre for sustainability training and environmental action within the Caribbean.

    Mission & Vision

The organisation’s mission is to build the capacity, knowledge, and confidence of individuals from both St Vincent and around the world, empowering them to take action towards a more just and sustainable future.

Their work focuses on preparing communities for the impacts of climate change through practical, long-term solutions. Key areas include food and water sustainability, renewable energy, environmental protection, and community education.

Through a “learning by doing” approach, participants are encouraged to engage fully in both study and practical work — developing skills in ecological farming, resource management, and community engagement.

The organisation aims to create future leaders who are equipped not only with knowledge, but with the experience and mindset needed to contribute to sustainable development on both a local and global scale.

Where You'll Be: St Vincent & The Grenadines

Our Climate & Sustainability Program is based in St Vincent & The Grenadines, a small Caribbean island nation known for its natural beauty, strong sense of community, and rich cultural heritage.

The country consists of the main island of St Vincent and a collection of smaller islands and cays, many of which are home to local communities and unique ecosystems. English is the official language, with Vincentian Creole widely spoken among locals.

The program takes place in a rural coastal area, surrounded by rainforest, mountains, and the Caribbean Sea. This setting offers a peaceful and immersive environment, but also means that infrastructure can be more limited compared to urban areas.

St Vincent is considered a welcoming and generally safe destination, with strong local connections and community support. However, like many countries, it is important to remain aware of your surroundings and follow local guidance and safety advice provided during the program.

The region is increasingly affected by climate change and natural events such as hurricanes, making it a meaningful location for sustainability-focused work and community resilience projects.

Participants will receive a full safety and orientation briefing on arrival, covering local customs, safety guidelines, and expectations for living and working within the community.
