Our Travel Roots 3D Coral Reef Mapping & Restoration Program in the Philippines combines cutting-edge digital reef modelling with practical coral restoration science.
This program focuses on using photogrammetry and 3D mapping technology to create detailed digital models of coral reef ecosystems. These models allow researchers to measure reef structure, coral cover, habitat complexity, and long-term ecological change with remarkable accuracy.
Why 3D Mapping Matters
Traditional reef monitoring relies on transects and visual surveys. While valuable, these methods capture only limited snapshots of ecosystem health.
3D reef mapping allows scientists to:
• Create high-resolution digital replicas of reef sites
• Measure structural complexity and habitat volume
• Track coral growth and mortality over time
• Monitor storm, bleaching, and climate impacts
• Compare restoration success rates across sitesThis technology enhances long-term conservation planning by providing measurable, repeatable, and visual ecosystem data.
Digital Conservation Meets Active Restoration
In addition to mapping, volunteers may assist in coral restoration initiatives. By combining 3D modelling with reef gardening, scientists can:
• Identify optimal restoration zones
• Monitor survival rates of transplanted corals
• Evaluate structural recovery
• Improve habitat complexity for marine speciesThis integrated approach strengthens both scientific understanding and practical restoration outcomes.
By volunteering on our 3D Coral Reef Mapping & Restoration Program in the Philippines, you will:
• Learn underwater photogrammetry techniques
• Capture reef imagery for 3D digital reconstruction
• Assist in building detailed reef models using mapping software
• Analyse reef structural complexity and coral cover
• Monitor restoration sites using measurable digital data
• Contribute to innovative, technology-driven marine conservation
• Develop advanced marine research and analytical skills
• Support ecosystem resilience and restoration planningWhat to Expect: Digital Reef Science in Action
This program blends underwater fieldwork with computer-based data analysis.
Participants usually arrive over the weekend, with the program beginning Monday.

Sunday is a rest day.Your Impact Through Digital Conservation
3D reef mapping provides conservation teams with quantifiable, repeatable, and visual data that improves long-term reef management strategies.
Your work supports:
• Measuring reef structural complexity
• Detecting coral loss or growth
• Monitoring restoration success
• Assessing bleaching and storm damage
• Informing Marine Protected Area planningBy integrating mapping with restoration efforts, conservation teams can move from reactive management to proactive, data-driven ecosystem protection.
This is modern marine conservation — combining science, technology, and hands-on restoration.
You contribute to building digital baselines that may guide reef protection strategies for years to come.

History
Our trusted marine conservation partner was established to protect and restore coral reef ecosystems in one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth. Operating in the central Philippines, the organisation works closely with local communities, dive professionals, and conservation authorities to monitor reef health and promote sustainable marine management.
Through long-term research, reef surveys, and education initiatives, the organisation has built a reputation for combining scientific rigour with grassroots conservation.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to advance marine conservation through high-quality scientific research, sustainable dive training, and meaningful community engagement.
Their vision is to protect Indo-Pacific coral reefs for future generations by training the next generation of conservationists while empowering local communities with science-based knowledge.
