  • Want to volunteer as a teacher in the Maasai lands of Kenya? Our Travel Roots teaching program will allow you to teach in the heart of Maasai land and help shape the future.

Step into one of Kenya’s most culturally rich and remote regions, where education is a powerful bridge between tradition and opportunity. As a volunteer teacher in Maasai Land, you’ll work in rural government schools—many with no electricity, limited supplies, and large class sizes—but filled with children who are eager to learn.

This is a chance to immerse yourself in one of Africa’s most iconic and enduring communities. The Maasai people are known for their proud traditions, distinctive dress, and deep connection to land and livestock. Living and teaching here means being welcomed into a way of life few travellers ever get to experience firsthand.

In the classroom, you’ll support lessons in English, maths, science, and more, helping students build the foundations for brighter futures. Outside of class, you’ll gain deep insight into a community that still holds tight to its cultural roots while embracing the value of education.

    Key Activities:

    • Assist or lead lessons in core subjects like English, maths, science, and social studies

    • Help develop creative and age-appropriate learning materials

    • Mark assignments and support classroom management

    • Contribute to computer literacy and basic technology exposure (if facilities are available)

    • Encourage students through positive mentorship and engagement

This is a program for those ready to step out of their comfort zone and into a setting that will challenge, inspire, and leave a lasting impact—on you and the community you support.

  • By volunteering on our Teaching in Maasai Land program, you will:

    • Teach in rural government schools where your presence brings vital support

    • Gain hands-on experience in classrooms with limited resources but boundless potential

    • Immerse yourself in the traditions and daily life of the Maasai—one of Africa’s most iconic cultures

    • Contribute to the long-term educational development of children in underserved communities

    • Live and volunteer in a truly off-the-grid setting surrounded by nature, simplicity, and purpose

  • What to Expect: A Day in the Life of a Volunteer Teacher

Life in Maasai Land moves at a gentler pace—shaped by sunrise, songbirds, and the rhythm of the community. You’ll wake to views of wide open savannah and spend your days creating meaningful moments in a rural classroom setting, where your support is truly needed.

    6:30 AM – Sunrise Start & Breakfast
Wake up to the stillness of the bush and enjoy a simple breakfast—usually tea and mandazi (fried bread) or porridge—prepared by your host family.

7:30 AM – Journey to School
Walk to your placement through scenic landscapes dotted with cattle, acacia trees, and grazing goats.

8:00 AM – Morning Classes Begin
Support or lead lessons in English, maths, science, or social studies. You'll help manage large class sizes and assist learners who need extra support.

    11:00 AM – Break Time
Join the children for tea and outdoor play—football, traditional games, or simply sharing stories in the sunshine.

11:30 AM – Midday Lessons Continue
Continue with teaching responsibilities, including lesson prep, marking, or creating visual learning tools using local materials.

    1:30 PM – Lunch & Rest
Enjoy a midday meal prepared by your host or served at school—often beans, rice, or vegetables—and take time to rest and reflect.

3:00 PM – Community Involvement or Prep
Spend your afternoon planning future lessons or engaging in light community work like gardening, language exchange, or helping at home.

Evenings – Cultural Sharing & Reflection
Evenings are for connection—chatting with your host family, learning Maasai customs, and soaking up the magic of village life under a star-filled sky.

    Days Off
Use your free time to explore nearby villages, hike local trails, or join cultural celebrations like traditional dances or storytelling around the fire.

  • Your Impact as a Volunteer

In rural Maasai schools where resources are few and class sizes are large, your support is not just helpful—it’s transformational. Many students have limited access to books, technology, and one-on-one guidance, making your presence a rare and valuable gift.

You’ll bring new energy into classrooms, helping learners engage with language, numbers, and ideas in ways that build confidence and create opportunity. Whether you’re explaining a science topic with handmade visuals or helping a student spell their first word in English, you’re laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

But your impact doesn’t stop at academics. Through daily interactions, cultural exchange, and mutual respect, you’ll become a bridge between worlds—broadening perspectives for both your students and yourself.

You’re not just teaching—you’re showing up, empowering, and reminding every child that their future matters.

  • Your Home in Maasai Land

In Maasai Land, you’ll stay with a welcoming host family in a rural village surrounded by open plains and natural beauty. The accommodation is simple but comfortable, offering a rare opportunity to live closely with one of Africa’s most culturally rich communities.

You’ll be staying in a traditional home built from local materials, with basic facilities and limited access to electricity or running water. Life here is slow, communal, and deeply connected to nature and tradition.

    What’s Included:

    • Shared sleeping area with mosquito net and bedding

    • Basic bathroom facilities (may include outdoor toilets or bucket showers)

    • Three home-cooked meals daily—simple, hearty, and locally sourced

    • Filtered drinking water, tea, and traditional snacks

    • Limited or no Wi-Fi—ideal for disconnecting and fully immersing

Evenings are peaceful, often spent around the fire, sharing stories, and learning about Maasai customs. The simplicity of life here is not a compromise—it’s part of the gift.

  • History

Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.

What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.

    Mission & Vision

The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.

Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
