Want to volunteer as a computer skills teacher in Kenya? Our Travel Roots computer skills teaching program is the perfect opportunity to help bridge the digital divide in Kenya.
In today’s world, digital literacy opens doors to education, employment, and empowerment. Yet in many parts of Kenya, access to computers remains limited. This program places you in schools or community centres in Nairobi where your knowledge can change lives—one lesson at a time.
You’ll teach the basics of computers, help learners navigate key applications like Microsoft Word and Excel, and introduce important concepts like internet safety, data handling, and presentation skills. Whether your students are children, teens, or adults, your guidance gives them the tools to participate in a growing digital economy.
Most participants will be using a computer for the very first time. With your support, they’ll gain confidence, independence, and a vital new skill set.
Key Activities:
Teach computer fundamentals: hardware, functions, and basic operation
Guide learners through popular software including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Introduce internet usage, safety, and digital communication tools
Help with practical tasks like typing, formatting, and file organisation
Support adult learners in using technology for business, education, or job readiness
No formal teaching experience is required—just patience, clear communication, and a passion for tech as a tool for change.
By volunteering on our Computer Skills Training program, you will:
Help bridge the digital divide by teaching essential tech skills
Empower students and adults with tools for education, employment, and communication
Gain hands-on experience teaching in real-world, low-resource settings
Support community-led learning at schools or local computer centres in Nairobi
Inspire confidence in first-time users and create meaningful impact through technology

In a world that increasingly depends on technology, being digitally literate is no longer optional—it’s essential. Your time as a computer skills volunteer helps bridge the gap between opportunity and access for individuals who may never have touched a computer before.
Whether you’re teaching students how to create a CV, helping a small business owner learn to use Excel, or guiding a young adult through typing lessons, you’re giving people the tools to participate fully in education, employment, and everyday life.
Your lessons will build more than just skills—they’ll build confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging in a digital world that often feels out of reach.
This isn’t just about computers. It’s about connection, empowerment, and creating futures where everyone has a chance to thrive.

History
Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, this grassroots initiative began as a local response to growing hardship in Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities. As job losses and economic instability swept through the area, the founders stepped in to provide food parcels, clean water, and hygiene essentials—mobilising quickly through local networks and international support.
What started as emergency relief soon evolved into something deeper: a platform where people could offer their time, skills, and compassion to lift others up. By 2023, the initiative was officially registered as a nonprofit organisation, opening the door to long-term development and volunteer-led projects that continue to grow each year.
Mission & Vision
The mission is to empower communities by providing practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions to local challenges—through volunteering, training, and shared resources.
Their vision is to create self-reliant individuals and resilient communities by equipping people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed for lasting transformation. Every project is built on a foundation of respect, accountability, compassion, and local collaboration—ensuring that change comes from within, and stays long after the volunteers have gone.
